710070 2008-10-06 07:42:00 Hi
I have an oldish Celeron computer that had Windows ME installed. I wanted to remove this to have a play with Linux.
While formatting the drive to erase Windows ME I removed the monitor and keyboard plugs. The computer 'froze' and started beeping. I can not get it to do anything now. If I press the 'reset' button (yes it's that old!) it stops beeping but as soon as I let go it beeps again.
How can I unfreeze it and reformat the hdd so I can use the machine?
Thanks

Why the heck did you do that?!
How do you know it froze? Did you plug them in again (while it was running)?
Sounds like it's fried something :badpc: .

710072 2008-10-06 16:59:00 Have you plugged them back in again? And tried restarting from a cold boot gary67 (56)
710073 2008-10-06 18:55:00 Have you plugged them back in again? And tried restarting from a cold boot Thats good advice  you cant go pulling out keyboards and mice & monitors then plug back in while running. Usually the monitor will start back up but the keyboard/mouse has lost its contacts and needs to be rebooted as Gary said. wainuitech (129)
710074 2008-10-07 08:07:00 Hi All
Yes, I tried to reconnect the monitor and keyboard plugs but no luck. Tried reinserting the floppy with formatting software on it to continue the format but no luck. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

710075 2008-10-07 08:19:00 Floppy with formatting software ?? I assume you mean a windows boot Floppy ?

Have you tried booting from the Linux CD and wiping the drive and letting it start again ? The format wont carry on, it will need to be restarted.

710076 2008-10-10 07:02:00 no, it's a specially set up floppy to format hdds (Win 98 and Me). It was working fine till I fiddled.
I don't think I can try installing the Linux software as the computer does not respond to anything.

710077 2008-10-10 08:04:00 It shouldn't matter what format or part formatting the HD is in, in the linux CD when it boots, you select it to install it will wipe what ever is there and format it to its own settings, swap file etc.

Formatting the Drive with a Windows Boot floppy wont have any effect on how Linux installs - You can download the windows boot floppy (nothing "special" about them - been around for years) from here (http://www.bootdisk.com/) - then as long as you know what you are doing, as in what commands to type in (DOS commands) its easy as falling off a log to format/ delete partitions on a Hard Drive.

If the computer doesn't respond to a bootable Floppy or Linux CD then its either a damaged CD/Floppy, or some other underlying hard ware problem or the boot sequence in the BIOS is not set to boot from these media's first.

710078 2008-10-10 08:23:00 If you want to format a Hard drive from a bootable Win98 floppy disk you do this

1. Boot from Windows 98 floppy disk.
2. Select Start Windows 98 with CD-ROM Support.
3. Then type A:\>format c: /s
4. Proceed with format Y.
5. Give Volume Label. (if you want, not required)

There are many other commands you can do to wipe partitions, create partitions, and numerous other operations, all depending on what you want to do.

710079 2008-10-15 02:34:00 Thanks but it was Windows ME that I had. The floppy did the same thing in terms of formatting and it was all going OK until it froze.
I can't seem to get it to install anything from floppy or CD-ROM.
Any other way to resurrect it?
