484376 2006-09-13 10:47:00 Hi There

Im on my way of thinking to move into a hostel next year.

Am I correct that I can have a broadband connection without having to pay for an actual phone line?

Last year I remembered I had to ask telecome to add a phone which i had to pay $44 a month .After that I then used my dialup

But I think things have changed this year? You can avoid the $44 and also have broadband am I correct?Something call naked dsl am i correct after telecome was forced to open its network but has the naked dsl regulation been enforced yet?

484377 2006-09-13 11:02:00 As far as I know there are no current ADSL plans that don't require you to pay for a phone line. That side of things is up to Telecom until the unbundled plans start to happen, and Telecom requires you to have a phone line to put the ADSL on.

You could always move to Wellington and get cable...

whenever the govt gets them self’s sorted :groan:

Heard that it was october.

I think that when Telecom opens up there lines to the max i.e. there will be no speed limit only how fast your line/exchange can go. (& NZ internet backbone grinds to a haut)

But I won’t believe that in till I see it.

I think the 3 years from now might be when the unbundled start to take action, & next year might be when adsl+2 may come in.

Again I won’t believe that in till I see it.

Hope this helps :)

484381 2006-09-13 12:11:00 "When" naked DSL does arrive, there will still be a (probably significant) charge for the use of the copper line over which the DSL is carried. It has an intrinsic cost and that has to be paid for by the user.

It will be cheaper than the "phone line with PSTN services" as we know it now, but by no means free, which is what ninjabear seems to assume.

But I do suspect you will be a few years older by the time it becomes a reality...

484382 2006-09-13 13:47:00 I don't get the question, Ninjabear.

If you're "thinking of moving into a hostel," won't your broadband options depend on the way lines are set up there for that?

So why don't you just ask the hostel?

The room in the hostel itself doesn't have a phone line but you can have it put in for you. There's a setup fee I think. After that you choose your broadband .It has nothing to do with the hostel. The phone line belongs to you only.My friend was with Xtra last year and he chose to be with xtra

484384 2006-09-14 02:54:00 The (possible) phone line in the room is likely to be a PABX line. I don't think ADSL works well through a PABX. :D

A full external line might not be allowed. You could ask. ;)

But there's no way you will ever get ADSL without paying for the line which carries it.
