483585	2006-09-09 20:30:00	A friend of mine contacted me yesterday to say she found her daughter smoking dope from a small glass pipe. She wanted to know what the drug was. Her daughter said it was just marijuana. Could it be something else? My guess was hash, but I really do not know. She is very concerned because her daughter is very depressed and unable to cope with life in general, being unmotivated and unorganised. I said it was probably due to the dope. Her daughter says she was like that before the dope and uses dope to make her feel better. I Googled around a bit but could not find any definitive answer. Anyone here know about this matter? 483586	2006-09-09 21:09:00	Hash is marijuana. So...depressed OR unmotivated? Because from what I've observed heavy users are always unmotivated. They sit around vacantly and do nothing, usually forgetting what they got up for in the first place.	pctek (84)

483588	2006-09-09 21:46:00	From what a friend told me, small glass pipes are usually used to smoke P or crack. A glass pipe usually isn't very good for smoking pot unless you use some sought of filtering system(helps stop swallowing the hot ash) Just do a google search on "Bong" and "crack pipe" If it was pot your friend should be able to smell it a mile away. As for P, it doesn't really have an odour	plod (107)

She could be smoking just about anything in a pipe . . . hash, meth, coke, you name it . If they want to TRY to figure out what it is, they might be able to use profiling to find the drug of choice . These are tendencies, not rules . . . but here goes: Marijuana is usually NOT smoke in a pipe but instead rolled into "cigarettes" (joints) . It usually slows people down, making them look introspective and deeply-considering thoughts about problems and life in general . Meditation and inner consciousness are themes that they generate, looking to solve problems with understanding . School grades slip and involvement or interaction with family and old friends usually suffer . "New" friends start coming around, but this is with any drug! "Grass" can be laced with many other drugs . . PCP and "Angel Dust" come to mind . . . there are also hallucinatory ingredients, although they tend to NOT be smoked with grass . Hashish is another extra ingredient that can be either mixed with, or used alone in a pipe . The real problem is that these people after using a lot of grass, lose most of their work ethic, ie: they want to just be left alone and not hassled . Usually smoked, but there are extracts of grass (THC) that can be ingested in novel ways . These people usually do not drive in an outwardly-apparant impared mode; on the contrary, they find it hard to break any laws at all while driving and usually drive too slow on the highway . They are afraid of being "busted" and try to adhere to the law, other than smoking dope, that is . I personally do not think that grass is an "entry drug" or one that leads normally to harder and stronger drugs . It's like alcohol, although destructive in different ways to the body . Heroin is a ringer-drug . . . . ie: most people on H are pretty well all together . . unless they "need" more, when they are hell-bent on getting more . . . or substituting Vicadin (second choice), when they usually extract the cocaine leaving the tylenol to get a better buzz on a concentrated hit . H can be shot-up (manifesting as just slightly more than social drinkers, as the effect to outside observation is a calmness and normal-ness with a smattering of that happy grin of a good drinker . Time and appointments with "friends" become very important; they are usually dealers and co-users . This is a very comon and available drug! Speed (meth) makes one irritable and nervous (and physically/mentally speaking and moving very fast, hence the name) . . . paranoid to an extreme and they usually become very ill-kempt or not worried about outside appearances . They will take hot offense to anyone telling them they are ruining their health and can be very physical, sometimes with unbelievable physical strength . Cocaine is a very nasty drug that takes a person on a very fast, extremely rushed "high" that last too short for their opinion . They actually crave more and more . . . and why not . . . it feels good . This is usually a very social drug, as people who use it are wont to be in groups of other users at the same time . It is very expensive too and requires larger and larger hits to get the desired effect . Preferred consumption of this drug is by snorting, not smoking . Nasal discharges and the ever-running nose are a giveaway; later on nasal damage requires surgical repair . Most of the above drugs can be smoked, some with better or less result . . . . depending upon the user's needs . Mind-altering drugs (the heavy ones like LSD-25, Purple-Ozlies, windowpane, and other street named ones), are not usually smoked as that tends to ruin the drug with heat or flame . PCP can be put into anything for an extra kick . . . very dangerous as this is an animal tranquilizer . One sure thing is that people who use these (and other) drugs are very defensive about their drug of choice . There may be a need for professional intervention . . . I personally DO NOT recommend Narc-Anon, as they just provide a haven and meeting place for users with the same problems to find new ways to "score" the drugs . (Here come the flames!) The most important consideration is that they (parents) must ask why their daughter is using at all . Is it peer pressure or does she want to escape? Drugs feel good . . . that's why people use them, and that's a given . Sex feels good too, and again, there's the reason we repeat it as often as we can . I imagine the flames are a-coming here from people who will defend and tell me that I am full of crappola for my post, but I worked in an intervention call center for a while . . . and have had to intervene for a brother-in-law and several neighbors . I have placed here the results-effects of the drugs as a very basic primer to help get the people you mention realize that they have a real problem here .	SurferJoe46 (51)

More likely these days, they use a bong (anything from a coke bottle or similar with a pipe coming out the side, with water in it.) Other apparatus used can be tinfoil rolled into a pipe or funnel, the breathing masks (like the ones you see in hospitals), knives (used for 'spotting' oil), or even used as an ingredient in cooking (such as hash cookies, hash cake). Or it can be smoked in the traditional way (as a joint) or mixed with tobacco in a rolly (roll-your-own cigarette). She may well have been smoking marijuana, she might have been doing something else. 483594	2006-09-10 02:31:00	Thanks for the info everyone. It helps. Update: My friend had to take her daughter (not a kid, in her mid 20's) to the hospital mental health unit since she had a meltdown and could not cope. She has two small children, solo mum, unemployed. I urged my friend to tell the mental health doctors/workers of the drug use. Evidently an ex-con, recently released from prison, stayed with the daughter and we suspect he brought drugs. The daughter has suffered from mental instability and depression for years and reading all of the above and putting bits together it is my hunch that drugs - probably more than marijuana - has tipped the balance so that she cannot cope. Its a real mess. :help: Unfortunately this scene is very common in NZ today. :waughh: :( BTW, awhile back I recall seeing a glass pipe on the main street of Greytown. I thought it was for ecstasy but now I see it can be for a variety of drugs.	Strommer (42)
