483333 2006-09-08 08:47:00 Whats the deal with saving videos off YouTube? I believe they are in 'flash' rather than avi / mpeg / mov format. Is there a way to save them without having to use a digital camera pointed at the screen?

Also, is anyone else having problems uploading large video files onto YouTube? I managed a 15 Mb video but trying a 60 Mb mpeg file caused it to stop at 44% done, twice: once with Firefox and again with IE.

483334 2006-09-08 08:53:00 I use a Firefox extension called VideoDownloader, It shows as an icon on the bottom of the screen, One click and it spits out a download link.

Then I have FLV player installed for playback, and Super Encoder (free app) for encoding into different formats.

Pretty simple, I showed Mrs Metla how it worked, She now has hundreds upon hundreds of videos saved to her comp, Must be time I formatted it and then claimed the harddrive failed....

483336 2006-09-08 09:33:00 Once again Metla enhances my PC experience. Thanks. Next time I'm in WangVegas I'll get you a beer or two, even if you haven't bothered to install decent coax for Prime TV.

>>FLV player installed for playback<<

Hmmmnnn. Is there something special about FLV player? I use Nero Vision and even on occasion - hate to admit it - the MS viewer thingie that comes with XP.

Why use Super Encoder? That is, why not leave the format as is? Or does the Firefox VideoDownloader have a format not useable for TV-DVD players?

483337 2006-09-08 10:16:00 I use FLV player because its near impossible to get FLV files to playback on a normal media player, I did manage to get it working on my main rig but Im buggered if I remembered how I did so.

Since I gave that rig a format I went to set it all up again and drew a blank:eek:

I use super-encoder so I don't have to install FLV player everywhere I go (not that I take my FLV files anywhere) But it makes sense to me to have them in a Windows native format. Who knows, In 20 years time I may stumble upon them on an old backup and not even know what they are.

Plus, I encode some of the more interesting video's onto my PSP.....Where they sit untouched untill I replace them with something else I'll never watch....

483338 2006-09-08 10:33:00 Better than anything is to buy or obtain a free copy of a FREE SOFTWARE product to convert it to another format, IE MPEG... this also creates better files, even if it only slightly. shaz (11107)
483339 2006-09-08 10:48:00 Super encoder does that, and is free, Anyhow its impossible to add data to a compressed media format, Once its been encoded then that data is lost, Re-encoding cant add it back in, The best you can hope for is a file of even worse quality as nearly all forms of encoding are in actual fact just compressing each individual image that makes up the movie, and seeing as they all work in different ways you can expect poorer results, never better.

You could turn your 2mb compressed video file into a raw video file of 200mb and there is no chance in hell of improving it, The removed data is still removed, quality would in this case be no worse, Though file size becomes an issue....

483340 2006-09-08 21:22:00 Mets, I downloaded FLV and it works just fine. VideoDownloader was only 10 Kb - the smallest download I've done in aaaages - and it went into Firefox just fine.

Having problems with Super Encoder. It installed OK but produces a video that is with wildly out of sync audio and video. After the default setting with mpeg 1 and 2, also AVI, I fiddled with frame rates but still no good. What is the trick? What settings do you use? Thanks.

483341 2006-09-10 05:52:00 hmmm.....As long as the source file is in good condition I have never had an issue of out of sync encoding while using super.

So sorry, No idea, apart from try a few different files and if it does it constantly......perhaps try another encoder.

483342 2006-09-10 08:02:00 MediaCoder is another possibility, I think I used it to encode a FLV video to avi. bob_doe_nz (92)
