Telecrim . . . . . Telescum . . . . . Telecrumb . . . . . Telenumb . . . . . Telecon . . . . . . Telegone?

Ahh! Telecom That's right! :yuck:

Ran like hungry mice to the Government prior to there announcement regarding unbundling legislation . Please,Please,Pretty please; Don't do this . We will promise to be on our best behavior from now on . We promise to share with others, what we lavish in . This was a "cheesy" move designed to thwart the inevitable .

They ran back to there hole and planned a surreptitious maneuver called Operation "Take no Prisoners" . This is the "secret squirrel" plan to dump there copper network [run it down] ,close exchanges and build more roadside cabinets, that 'only' fit 'there' phone racks . They aim to lay more fibre cable in planned FTTC [fibre to the cabinet] deployment . This will give them a "new" infrastructure that will not come under the umbrella of the Governments new Telecommunications Unbundling Legislation . Talk about a leopard never changing it's spots . . . . Sheesh!! This new plan is called NGN .

This means that other internet service providers will be landed with a proverbial "DOG" of a network, that is prone to congestion and speed limitations that are part and parcel of the old copper network . In the meantime Telecom surfs on its new Fibre Network without competition in that area . Where talking 50 - 100mb/s .

The Government if it's smart, needs to include NGN in its unbundling decision . Or else the whole country gets F^cked-Over once again by Telecom

This smacks of hypocrisy,as Gattung stated in Telecommunications conference Quote: We get it! . We promise to fast track without hindrance to other internet providers . Yeah Right . . . . . . Now there telling the Government to hurry up .

Have you been asleep? NGN isn't new, it's been publicised ever since Telecom partnered with Alcatel . That's been 5 or 6 years so you should be asking why it's taken so long .

The Govt Bill already includes access to the exchanges and cabinets to give ISPs access to the copper and backhaul to an interconnect point .

How can we apply pressure to the polticians drafting the legislation so this doesn't happen? Email addresses for MP's for instance, that way we can start an email campaign .
I imagine Telecom is playing on the Politicians ignorance of technical matters .

483258 2006-09-08 02:55:00 Oh dear. :groan:

A lot of people have howled for deregulation and competition so the free capitalistic market can provide everything they want.

Telecom seems to be behaving as a commercial enterprise protecting its commercial assets (a lot of which is our investment over the years, but that's been sold to Telecom). If you want "free" enterprise and competition in a degregulated market environment, why are you demanding that Telecom submit to stringent regulation and the "socialization" of its assets so that its competition can profit at its expense?

Telecom probably take the attitude: "If someone wants to compete, let them build their own infrastructure." Saturn/Telstra tried, and ran out of money. :D

483259 2006-09-08 04:45:00 Look at the mess deregulation of strategic infrastructure like rail, power, airports etc . . . has left NZ in .
Capitalism should work for everyone, not everyone working for Capitalism . Clearly Telecom is not working for the taxpayer (Look at our OECD Broadband uptake) .
The collective good should come first, if it takes regulation to reign-in a corporation then so be it . 'Market Forces' have no conscience when you have a monopoly organisation like Telecom . The government should never have corporatised Telecom's line infrastructure .

I would suggest the Government split Telecom into an infrastructure arm (controlled & owned by the taxpayer) and a Service Arm (Privately owned which offers services over the network owned by the taxpayer) .

I have no time for hysterical free-marketeers who are blinded by their own greed into rationalising 'Market forces' as the ultimate good .

You've already said that the politicians are technically ignorant but that won't matter as they can't afford to pay for the network. Unlike the railway it would cost more than $1.

483261 2006-09-08 06:06:00 Meh, If telecom build something then they own it, The Goverment should butt out.

The only outcome of futher meddling would be to force Telecom to not spend anything futher on infranstuctre in NZ and for the share price to take another plunge.

As far as Im concerned 2mb adsl should suffice for everyone who wants a cheap laymans service, Though the price still has to come down.

483262 2006-09-08 06:48:00 NZ is caught in the horrible position of not being large enough to have private companies drive infrastructure as the subsciber base/potential is too low to get an effective return on investment.
Telecom in fact was a State Owned Enterprise which is now a private company. There is no way around it, the taxpayer has to fund infrastructure If we want 'Faster, Cheaper broadband' we'll have to stop accepting the half-arse, no8 fencing wire mentality and cough-up as taxpayers to fund the infrastructure required.
