Can't argue about that but it is a bit more personal.

484588 2006-11-07 17:05:00 "The government should spend its money" on a new/improved stadium for Auckland, on broadband Internet access, on ...

Are these the voices of those who love the free market, and hate socialism?
What makes me laugh is that someone that I know that would take nearly two hours to get to the cake tin pays more in rates towards it than someone who lives next door.
If it is all such a good idea let private enterprise handle it.

484589 2006-11-07 17:08:00 Screw them all, They are talking about millions upon millions of our money to be all fancy for an event that is going to make a 50 millin dollar loss (covered by us, cheers *******s),meanwhile the Wanganui Hospital is unable to supply basic services and the nationwide wait-lists are disgusting and criminal.

Ho about the damn fools give us some value for OUR MONEY before they just throw it at the suits for their pathetic ego-stroke.
I've just to agree with you again.

Poet Laureate perhaps? I don't think the clown suit that mayors should don are suitable in this case.

484592 2006-11-08 14:15:00 When the Roman poet Juvenal said:"Give them bread and circuses," it was an ironic comment on a formula to distract the general populace from unpopular decisions made by their rulers.

Now we have a government decision that Auckland must have a "national" stadium which all of the country's taxpayers must help pay for.

We all know that's come about now simply because NZ will be hosting the Rugby World Cup. The NZ Rugby Union took a punt & got it.

So it's the NZRU who will provide the circus.
But all of us are expected to provide the bread.

484594 2006-11-09 09:32:00 It's not just the stadium that has to be built. They seem to have left out the whole infrastructure - roads leading to the stadium, parking, train & bus services, etc

In Singapore, they have a 60,000 seat stadium (just 5 to 10 minutes out of the city). Soccer is the craze there. Whenever there is a game, the roads leading to the stadium are jammed pack. Mind you, the roads leading to the stadium are 10 lanes (5 lanes each way), not to mention the huge car park, the number of cars leaving after the game. 6-carriage trains are packed, leaving at 3 minute intervals. Special bus services are provided in addition to the normal runs. (In Singapore, sports infrastructures (capital and operating expenditure are fully borne by the government)

In NZ, the peak traffic is bad enough. Can you imagine having a 60,000 seater stadium in the city? What to do with the number of stadiums that we have after the world cup? Eventually, it's the rate payers who will bear the running costs.

484595 2006-11-09 09:38:00 What about a giant hot-air balloon with stadium, seats and parking moored above the beehive to take advantage of the free fuel? R2x1 (4628)
