484556 2006-11-03 05:52:00 The lower class make a mockery of the Lower Class.

But then...all cities have those problems.....it's just worse in Auckland.

Unless you too believe it's all the Governments fault????.....and support a it's-everyone's-fault-but-my-own mentality.....

PS: I've been meaning to ask...who is Rachael Luttrell ?

484559 2006-11-03 06:45:00 Not sure if I agree . Auckland is so spread out and transport infrastructure so fractured at placing a stadium on the waterfront of Auckland is not a good choice .
Auckland has its problems but to think that Wellington could possibly support such a stadium is foolish thinking . Wellington does well with what it has and the cake tin is an awesome stadium but do you really think that week in week out 60,000+ wellingtonians would continually show up?

Eden Park is a pig of a stadium to get too, I'm a big rugby and cricket fan but the thought of getting to Eden park is enough reason to go to the pub and watch it live on Sky .

Getting into Auckland central can be a mission during peak hours, but during any other times it isnt actually all the bad (much easier than getting to eden park) . Knowing i could catch the train to within a few 100m's of the stadium would make 20/20 games and friday night footy [b]alot[/p] more appealing .

Selling out a stadium the size of the one proposed would be a major task in any of NZ's cities . The new NPC isnt exactly a shining beacon of excitement and the Black Caps continual top order collapse arent gonna fill stadiums anytime soon .

With a 1/4 of the countries population Auckland is always going to be the only place a national stadium will be built .

They are better to patch up Eden park (which will 60000 capacity anyway), and plan for a new stadium to be completed in the next 15-20 years, possibly at the Albany stadium location . This is a white elephant in itself, as it is too small, but it has potential due to its location .
Thats the best idea ive heard in regards to this topic, but honestly do you expect the government to ever pay for 2 stadiums? Im surprise they're even consider the waterfront option . Plus it'd be nice to see Eden Park remain the home of Auckland rugby for just a lil bit longer :)

Maybe not, but you hardly ever see eden park full for regular games . Aucklanders aren't the best sporting supporters . Because of Wellingtons positioning in the country, good transport infrastructure (however far from perfect) and the cheap airfares, it would be the second best location . However I do agree that ideally it should be in the place of the highest population concentration . My point with the Wellington stadium, was that it was a huge missed opputunity, because if the government had put in $100 million into it, we would already have our national world class stadium .

The rugby union have mucked this up, and kissed eden park goodbye . When they bid for the world cup, their inital proposal said that they would spend less than $100 million to upgrade eden park from 50, up to 60 thousand people . Then it went up to 200 million, and now it is at 350 million . For that sort of price you could build a new 40000 seat stadium on a green field site (not requiring waterfront piling work) .

484562 2006-11-03 09:39:00 Maybe if the designers / architects get to share whatever is left out of the original estimate after all rectification for the first 7 years is settled instead of a percentage of the final cost, it would be better; dare I say affordable? I must be a cynic. R2x1 (4628)

Ummm .... you can catch a train to within a few hundred metres of Eden Park.

484564 2006-11-03 20:27:00 I saw a sketch of the new stadium and my question is - why spoil the waterfront with an oversized bedpan. tutaenui (1724)

If Wellington has the 'caketin', Auckland will have the 'Auckland Potty' TM
