484546 2006-11-03 02:46:00 Why waste good waterfront land with a stadium? :illogical

Why waste a good stadium on Auckland:confused:

It's bad enough that the first impression tourists have of NZ is Auckland, why compound the problem by making those smart enough to see the real NZ go there to watch a game of rugby .

Don't get me wrong . I love my footy, and would sell my grandmother to go to the Final, but given all the problems Auckland has with congestion, infrastructure, South Auckland . . . . . . there's got to be a smarter way .

Wellington would be ideal, but there are other options .

But money talks, so Aucklanders, enjoy your new stadium .

484547 2006-11-03 03:20:00 Putting a stadium where the container ports are seems like a silly idea to me.

Where would the ports be shifted to?
One would assume if it has to be big enough to hold 66,000 people, it would be horrible sight from both the city and the sea. It's not like it would merge nicely into the background like the Sydney Opera House.
The only way you can get that many people there is via public transportation. Has the cost of upgrading that been factored into the price?
What about global warming. The government says it takes it seriously, then goes and builds a stadium right by the sea?
What about North Harbour Stadium? Surely it is cheaper to build a second stand on an already new stadium? The Northern Busway will be finished by then and there is plenty of surrounding land.
Does Auckland really need another stadium?

Theres no other city in NZ with the population to support such a stadium. You can get all angry and upset but you have to face facts that Auckland is the only city with the population to justify such a stadium.

Hence my last comment.......dollars will dictate Auckland gets the stadium.

And....no....I'm not angry and upset.....that was when Bates kicked the ball through the scrum and Kelleher scored an illegal try.... T HA T was angry and upset.

But it's okay Pete.....I've managed to move on:p .....just

484550 2006-11-03 04:16:00 ....it would be much better to give the "National Stadium" concept to another city who just might get something up and running in time for the World Cup.

I agree. We got too much other things to fix first.

Why not Hamilton or Tauranga ?

Hamilton would be perfect if the stadium was placed in an accessible place:
-Hamilton is not too far from auckland, so aucklanders (being a significant portion of NZ's population) would still be able to get there.
-Hamilton doesnt have any other real attractions, so a stadium would help in that respect.
-Auckland, especially the waterfront has enough issues as it is! Sure it's in the centre of the Auckland region for easy access, and will look nicer than otara for the tourists, but honestly, that area is crowded enough as it is!

Furthermore, why isnt NZ Rugby (or Rugby Union) paying for any of it? I'm not a rugby fan, so why should my taxes go into worsening the traffic i'm paying to fix?

Yep, Hamilton ot Tauranga, or dont bother at all... Hamilton has the bigger population to support it.

They could, of course, put it in the manukau harbour, near the airport and motorway, away from all the really nasty conjestion, and still within easy reach of central/east/west/south auckland and even north shore plus the waikato region.

and beefing up the north shore stadium for a fraction of the cost of building a new stadium would also be a much more viable alternative

484551 2006-11-03 04:33:00 just a thought, why not put the stadium where the western springs speedway was/is? it's situated right on a major intersection/motorway on-offramps which is meant to be able to handle all the traffic (but like all other roads in Auckland can't)

and if residents can move in next door to a speedway (motorsport-stadium) and get it closed due to noise, how will we pull off building a new sport-stadium which will cause weekly traffic jams?

I'm interested to know why we have to wait for roads and public transport to be funded, and yet hundreds of millions of dollars can magically appear to build an expensive stadium that no one seems really sure they actually want lol

...love that comment!

You've got a better chance of getting tickets to the RWC Final 20 minutes before kick-off than getting into hospital in three years to have a heart condition fixed...

Not sure if I agree. Auckland is so spread out and transport infrastructure so fractured at placing a stadium on the waterfront of Auckland is not a good choice. It sounds more like a Labor Govermnet/ Helen Clarke shrine to me. Also talk about a high cost, 3/4 billion dollars is far too high, and 60 thousand seats isn't enough for the long term. That works out at over 12 thousand dollars per seat! They should be looking at 80000 seats minimum. Aucklanders also don't support their sport, so the amounts of times it will be completely full, will only be for major sporting events and concerts. This is unlike Wellington, which is good at supporting events, so is placing it in Auckland a good idea.
I was involved with the Wellington stadium development, which cost $121 million, which was a bargain compared to this Auckland thing. Almost half of the cost went into the legal side of its development. The Wellington stadium was only completed 6 years, although there was over 10 years of planning before that. When it was first planned, the stadium was supposed to hold 60-80 thousand people, and it was mooted that it would be ideal for a national stadium. However due to lack of support from the government, the capacity was reduced to 39500, and was funded through a loan, and the regional council. Wellington rate payers are going to continue paying for it for many years to come.
Although this is the best stadium in NZ, being ideally placed ad a transport hub, it was always flawed, because it is too small, and is often sold out for major events. Due to the size it doesn't attract the really large events such as major international concerts such as U2. The old Athletic park that it replaced, had a larger capacity! If the government were not so short sighted we could already have our national stadium suitable for 80 thousand people, ideally placed in the centre of the country.
The government now appears to be trying to rush in a national stadium, which appears to be too small, too expensive, and in the wrong location. Rushing this will leave Auckland with a white elephant on their waterfront, and NZ tax payers forking out for it.
They are better to patch up Eden park (which will 60000 capacity anyway), and plan for a new stadium to be completed in the next 15-20 years, possibly at the Albany stadium location. This is a white elephant in itself, as it is too small, but it has potential due to its location.

No, Albany, Mt Smart and Eden park (choose any two) will be sold for commerical and residential use, if it goes ahead .

And just what is wrong with South Auckland?

I live a minutes drive from Otara and can tell you that the media love to make a mockery of the lower class areas .

I've lived in South Auckland all my life and still do, and have yet to be mugged, stabbed and beaten to a bloody pulp .

You never hear anything about posh schools (aka Kings College, Auckland Grammar) and the students doing drugs there . Heck even Middlemore are sick of doped up kids at Kings .
