brisbane, in my personal opinion, is a hole... it only serves as an airport through which i must travel to get to surfers;)... and the only reason i would return/went there in the first place is the theme parks.... that's all auckland needs - a 'world class' theme park:D

and man does brisbane have an ugly bridge - honestly, can they put enough trusses on the thing?!

Who knows.......but it has some nice beaches, in a windy, post-apocalyptic way....

And a really nice lake......the name of which escapes me presently...

Anyhow, Im not talking about holidays, Im talking about living.

And for what its worth the very best holiday I have ever had was a private cabin 4 feet away from the high tide mark on a secluded island in the whitsundays.:thumbs::thumbs:

484751 2006-11-26 10:07:00 Utopia: 2 - Buy-out and take-over POAL.This then gives you access to POAL land.

Motorbyclist: ports of Auckland are somewhat important: last figure i read was $21 billion dollars of importance..... basically ARC funds our parks etc etc, and I'd like to see that funding continued, but perhaps the 4 cities and the arc should all combine into one

Yep!,POAL are very important for our export/import economy.By buying them out,it would mean that there operations would continue as normal, except for the fact that there new owner is the Govt.In fact, this synopsis would inject more funds into there operation for expansion of facilities and further reclamation.Of course the bonus here *whispers* is that the Govt gets to build Stadium N.Z on Bledisloe Wharf. :D

yes, which would disrupt poal, costing nz alot of money.... perhaps the stadium should go by victoria park or in the manukau.... sounds like the whole thread all over again

and who says the arc will sell such a major asset to helen mugabe? it wont lessen our taxes at all:yuck:

484753 2006-11-28 04:22:00 I believe that the Government should build "StadiumNZ" at the Eden Park site . "Ditch" the HOK design and use Warren and Mahoneys design . ;)

My thinking is that it's better to have the right Stadium at the wrong location than the wrong Stadium at the wrong location .

As "StadiumNZ" would still be a National Stadium,it would still be funded by the Government via the Taxpayer with the addition of the $50 million already designated by the ACC .

Since Mike Lee from the ARC decided not to veto the waterfront site,I believe it's not fair to punish the Auckland ratepayers for his lack of vision . :groan:

With this option Auckland ratepayers only pay a very modest amount . The rest is paid for by bed/tourist taxes and the balance is from the Government and sponsorship . This would also mean that as the Government has a vested interest in the Stadium,it would appoint Govt Representatives to the Eden Park board with existing trust managers chosen on merit .

What it also means is that other Kiwi's outside of the greater Auckland Metropolitan area would be able to access 10,000 - 15,000 tickets via Ticketek . This would be not only for the RWC-2011 but also for All Blacks test matches . It is also fair and democratic that Kiwi's from the rest of N . Z have access to StadiumNZ events at the Eden Park location . And as a taxpayer they are entitled too . :D

Warren and Mahoneys design is the better by far . It has more class, more vision and provides a better infrastructure and legacy . Demolish all of the "hick" stands that exist now, develop better access from the Kingsland Station and look at removing the houses between the station and the stadium . With this new open space build open bars, restaurants and cafe's . You could add white sails for shade which would be "very Auckland" .

I have forwarded this proposal onto Trevor Mallards office for his consideration .

484754 2006-11-28 06:41:00 Just my thoughts on this whole thing....
So, the government managed to think coherently and ditch the waterfront stadium idea. Bout time.
Now, Eden Park (or North Shore)... As for who pays for the upgrades. Auckland rate-payers. Simple.
Why... there is an M.O. for Auckland, anytime they want something, the rest of the country either has to pay for it, or wait while the funds are pushed Aucklands way, then get the crumbs later. And as per usual, noone else but Auckland actually benefits.
The World Cup ... great exposure for NZ.. sure. But if the Tourism Board did its job properly well people should already know where NZ is and that there was more to NZ than Auckland. But in the end, 10,000+ people are going to fly into Auckland, spend all their money in Auckland, and then leave. Who benefits? Auckland. Oh sure, maybe 100 people might venture out of the city and see some of the rest of NZ, wow wee.
So, conclusion, if Auckland benefits by all this money, then Auckland should pay. User pays right?
But alas, it wont happen, the government will throw in a hundred million or so, and the rest of us will pay for it... again.

484755 2006-11-28 06:48:00 Yep, Wellington paid for their Stadium, Auckland can pay for their one.

Hopefully now this crap will stay out of the news.
