484526 2006-09-14 04:15:00 Why not!?

Because Aucklanders have shown a penchant for squabbling amongst themselves and never coming to any conclusion in time, or ever.

Thus it would be much better to give the "National Stadium" concept to another city who just might get something up and running in time for the World Cup.

484527 2006-09-14 21:20:00 So while the rest of nz is taxed to help auckland to sort out their traffic congestion problems they want to make it worse
and get the government to help them.

it think it is big business gone mad.

484528 2006-09-14 21:43:00 The waterfront is a dumb idea - traffic and parking alone, as mentioned, would be a nightmare. If a new stadium had to be built East or South Auckland would be way better.

Yeah right. This is South Auckland. It's supposed to be full of "low life scum" "lower socio-economic class suburbs" and gangs.

As soon as you say South Auckland, the first thing that most people think is Otara.

484529 2006-09-14 21:57:00 The idea behind my thought of South Auckland, is that there's swathes of space down below Manukau, as far as Pukekoe. Same as East Auckland - lots of cheap farmland where a stadium and parking could be ideal. Greg (193)

Why not Hamilton or Tauranga ?

Ever tried parking anywhere near Eden Park?

Anyway spending hundreds of millions of dollars of OUR money for one football match is the silliest thing I've ever heard of.

Remember when ChCh spent piles of money on a stadium for the Commomwealth games? All the glowing stories about how useful it was going to be for further generations. Yeah right!

484532 2006-09-15 04:56:00 Well........

They are talking of building it on Bledisloe Wharf, which is not bad idea, and there are water, rail (Britomart) and road transport hubs within a short walk. There are many parking buildings within walking distance too. Hotels and restaurants are also available for out-of-towners, who can also walk to the venue.

It can't be any worse than the Cake Tin's location in Wellington, and of course some short-sighted people have already built a smaller version a few hundred metres along the road as well so there's a precedent been set.

It could work, and would be better than Eden Park which has zero parking, shocking road access and rail isn't much better.

Cheers

484533 2006-09-16 02:28:00 If i was going to the World Cup i'd go if it was at the waterfront...I went to the AB V Lions match...and it was shocking to get to and from....

Jade Stadium is currently going through a upgrade....why dont take advantage of that? And its perfectly placed, 5-10 min walk from town.....I've been to every game in Crusdaders unbeaten season and i walk home from there.....30-45 mins...no biggy....

Why does it have to be auckland this auckland that...sure its our biggest city but its also one of our worst when it comes to organistation, transport,....

Jade is goign through a upgrade and we dont even hear it on the news....no one is complaining???

one hint of eden park getting expanded....everyones complaining???

And why does it have to be minimum 60,000....keep it at 45,000...most ppl would probably be watching it at home on sky since the transport to the park would ensure they get there to only see the trophy being lifted....

Give eden park the All Black Pool and 2 semis to shut them up, and give Jade Stadium the Final....and the worst pool..i reckon thats fair, who cares if jade has Japan v Georgia and Spain v Ukaraine...as long they host a great final...
(No i'm not biased...I'm just stating...why eden park? theres a park going through a upgrade currently...take advantage of it....eden park is already fully made, leave it as it is....)
Have they even worked out how its going to work??

Hamilton, new Plymouth, Palmerston North, Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland, Hawkesbay, Blenheim, Nelson, Christchurch, Whangerai....they're all gonna want games...

Maybe it was better if Japan got it in 2011....we're gonna need more than 5 years to get sorted at this rate...

Get your heads outta ur butts and sort something out!

Dont wanna be like West Indies....currently ICC is considering rewarding next years cricket world cup to South Africa due to West Indies not currently up to date and ready...they got till October to prove they will be ready or they're lose it......Imangine losing it to Australia again!!!

484534 2006-09-16 10:57:00 A few people here are saying "Why make the traffic worse?" by building a new stadium .
Ive lived in Auckland my whole life and I think traffic problems are the main reason FOR the new stadium . .
Eden park is impossible to get to . Its in a suburban area so you cant take the motorway to get to it, you have to wind your way through a bunch of little suburban streets . Its impossible now with a 40,000 capacity . . . can you imagine 60,000 for the world cup final driving around little suburban streets (some of them one-way) trying to find a carpark . ???? The buses run I think, but they are just on game day so nobody knows where to catch them, the trains only come from the western line, so South, North and eastern people cant take the train, only their cars . . . . . .

Every bus, train and ferry in Auckland is heading to Britomart which is within 200 metres or so of the proposed site . . . there are lots of carparking buildings in the city that are pretty quiet after 6pm and people staying in hotels in the city can walk to the game instead of causing more traffic by going to Mt Eden .

Its going to be on Bledisloe wharf which is where part of the Ports of Auckland are now so its taking land that we use for unloading cars and containers onto .

Someone posted here that the stadium in Christchurch was hardly used after the commonwealth games but this is a rugby (maybe cricket)stadium we are talking about . If its good it will be used most weekends of the year for either Auckland or the AB's, or cricket .

I hope they build the thing . Redevelop eden park later as a test match cricket venue(give it larger boundaries and less imposing stands), and have the rugby and one-dayers at the waterfront . . . . Then both major sports are catered for in Auckland .

Some people also mentioned that Christchurch or wellington could host the final cos they have good stadiums but its not only the stadium that is important . If you have thousands of tourists you need enough hotels and services for them to be catered for . . . . . The lions tour was small compared to this . . . It makes sense to have it in the largest place possible .

And, the last of my ranting is about the size of the stadium . Someone mentioned 45,000 is enough but its not us, but the IRB that have stipulated that the stadium for the final must hold at least 60,000 . otherwise we would lose the tournament .

484535 2006-09-16 12:37:00 I agree with csinclair83:thumbs:

I also think Auckland has too many more important problems to sort out first .

Countless roads to re-route,to fix,to upgrade,to make safer,
Schools in disrepair,
Electricity,
Sewage,
Hospitals,
etc . . . . . ,

Also Auckland ratepayers are allready paying alot of money in rates and they will have to pay more to fix the problems they have allready now,why add to their dispair . :D

Let another city have it .

Auckland cant/does not fix the problems it has now . Its overburden or unwilling to sort the basics out first .

I think they should just make it one city and have one mayor, one council, less red tape, less burocrats, less fighting amongest themselfs and think of whats best to fix the city and not themselfs-all the different mayors/councils I mean . Yeah Right!!
The money they saved from getting rid of the excess could help to pay for Aucklands problems .
