| 484222 | 2006-09-13 08:56:00 | Spring is here but in the mornings it is still cold!...The only differences now is that by 6.30-7am the day is starting to show...getting lighter now and not like before where its mostly dark and dull... | Mr Wetzyl (362) | ||
| 484223 | 2006-09-13 09:12:00 | I went to a NZ site (xtramsn.co.nz and here: xtramsn.co.nz), and saw there was a bikini/Summer note there.... OK..so here's the question...since you guys live in Upside-Down Land, is Summer coming next in your seasonal que or Winter like the rest of the world? I can't imagine that you call the cold part of the year Summer, and Winter is the time for "reduced" clothing...but what's the truth? Do you just call the warm season Summer for you own purposes...or do you stick to the convention that Winter starts on or about December 22nd? Please tell me not all Americans are so cough........ self centred and ignorant (sorry this is not an insult, your post is self centred and ignorant). Our summer and Winter is close to opposite simply because "basically" the way the Planet tilts on its axes over the the course of the year. You do relise there are many countries South of the equator right lol? If your post was a joke, I apologise for being so harsh. |

Since WE (Northern Hemisphere) are entering the last part of our hot season, we call the next season Fall, and it preceeds Winter . Now . . . here's the tricky part and I am not being ego-centric here, do you call the next season . . . the one that starts on September 22nd, Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring? I am interested if you call the hot season Summer out of local convention or defiance of the Northern Hemisphere's label of what would be our Winter . :D I don't mind . . . no, make that I APPLAUD  rebellion against conventions and attitudes . . . but I just wanted clarification, not necessarily justification . |

| 484226 | 2006-09-14 03:09:00 | The original question takes me back 50 years in England. A religious fanatic had managed to convince a member of my family to have her in the house and listen to her "Christian" beliefs. I listened in - to hear to my amazement the good lady explaining the seasons and how god had arranged for the earth to move closer to the sun every year so that we had summer, and then moving the earth further away for the winter. I couldn't resist it "But Australia, New Zealand and the other southern hemisphere countries have their summer when we have the winter. Does the earth split into two pieces - and if so how do we manage to cross over if we emigrate to Australia?" She paused. Then enlightenment lit up her face - "God in his infinite wisdom will explain all when the day of judgement falls" I had the good sense to see she was banned from our home from then on. She was cuckoo. |

I would assume that when the English settled here, they figured they would name the seasons exactly the same as in England . However they just occur at diferent times to the motherland . It's not really that hard to grasp this concept . |

| 484229 | 2006-09-14 04:17:00 | It wan't a matter of "deciding" to call the seasons the same . There was no need for a decision; they spoke English . Winter is the cold wet season . In England that can sometimes mean that "Year" is a synonym for "Winter" . The concept wasn't universally grasped . Many of the early settlements were laid out using plans drawn in England . A house in England can be built facing South to catch the sun (when it's there ;) ); in the Southern hemisphere it must face North . Guess what was the preferred direction in the plans? |

| 484230 | 2006-09-14 06:15:00 | Thanks for a couple of you taking this somewhat seriously . . . I was just caught up in the goofy-ness of thinking that you had Chistmas in Summer . . . not that it makes any difference, just a date that all can relate to . . that's all . . . . . As I now understand it, the cold season is universally accepted (and acceptable) as Winter, and the hottest season as Summer . Fini! I can dig it . . . . . :D |
