484676 2006-11-20 09:25:00 useful? it may be useful, but it is not practical and it will only render the existing stadiums obsolete.... we already have stadiums surplus to requirements in auckalnd, so why build another one?
All the old stadiaa can be used for storing redundant councillors and second hand import cars. It's gotta be big, bigger is better.

And also slightly relevant, (from Terry Pratchett):-

Captains Vimes theory of social inequality as shown through boots:

A man earns $20 a month. A good pair of boots cost $60. A bad pair of boots which let the rain in, have to be propped up with cardboard and only last 3 months cost $15.

If you buy the $60 pair of boots, they will last you a lifetime of warm feet. If you buy the $15 pair of boots they will always pinch your feet, leak and wear out in a few months.

The rich man spends $60 on boots
The poor man spends $300 on boots AND always has wet feet.

Better a big stadium than lots of under sized worn out ones. (We'll grow into it)

By POAL

At a Board meeting of Ports of Auckland Limited held today, the Directors received a report from the management concerning the waterfront stadium proposal . The Company’s position as agreed to by the Directors may be summarized as follows .

There are a range of works which would have to be carried out to enable land to be released to enable work on the platform and stadium to be commenced . The Company would release the land were it to be agreed:

- that those works be done at no cost to the Company

- be commenced and completed in time to enable relocation of the Company’s affected operations to permit normal port work to be carried on without interruption of its service to its customers; and

- that the Company be compensated for all damage to its business .

It would take some time to build substitute facilities after all consents were received . Other interim facilities may be able to be provided to enable earlier access to the site but none has been found so far that meets the stadium time-line .

The Company’s position has been made clear in letters sent to the Minister dated 3 November and to the Chief Executives of Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council dated 13 November 2006 .

The overriding concern of Directors is to maintain the efficient operation of the port and the quality of service to its customers .

Since the “waterfront” option was first mooted, the Company has always been prepared to consider any specific proposition . It has actively co-operated with the Government to investigate various possibilities but to date the Company has not seen what it considers to be a feasible proposition and it has not received any commercial proposal to evaluate .

I can only hope that POAL* will let the Government utilize the Bledisloe Wharf for "All N . Z" . Sure! its currently being used for commercial traffic . But modern businesses often have to relocate, downsize and reconfigure there business model in order to improve services .

If POAL* leases Bledisloe Wharf to the "People Of N . Z" [via Govt] not only would POAL* generate extra income, but with further compensation for the said land from Govt . . . . the end result would bode well for its bottom line . ;)

As for access to the port itself, currently there is access via Tinley St & Plumer St . If the said Stadium were to be built spanning from the edge of Bledisloe Wharf to/and including Tinley St,then yes!,there would be enough room to both facilitate the footprint of the stadium and negate any possible interference with both ships calling at Bledisloe Wharf and Transport Logistics operating to and from this Wharf . As Tinley Street would now house part of the stadium, access would be via Plumer St,and I believe that this would not hinder through traffic of Transport Vehicles,as Tinley Street leading from Beach Road, would more than likely than not, be closed on Big Match days . Therefore, commercial operations could continue unabated from Quay St via Mechanics bay direction using Plumer St as the main access point .

Come on POAL*! . This is now in your hands . Kiwi's need your help . :help:

problem is they may lose revenue as they cannot use the wharves that the stadium is occupying: the 'compensation' would have to be greater than the loss of income is order look good in the books

it still amuses me that the govt/council is ready to repeal laws/fast track all the legislation/permits which normally prevents/discourages private companies building such projects

484679 2006-11-21 06:18:00 Waterfront in my view is the best option .

Those who are opposing with exaggerated views on congestion and ruining of views are just short sighted when it comes to bigger picture

And i know Eden Park will very likely get the Go Ahead . The current debate and bickering by people on spoiling views of city/waterfront underlines why New Zealand suck when it comes doing something at world stage .

Everyone is so busy coming up with excuses when they cant see this is a golden opportunity to showcase somethign bold to the the rest of the world and the "lets do it attitude" is just not there . . . If Aussies were in the same position they would have have done it in a blink of eye without bickering and moaning .

484680 2006-11-21 08:21:00 Oops didnt see this thread . . . well below is my advice for you NZ'rs
===============================================

You Kiwis Suck . . . . Ha Ha !

Cant even do something bold and classy when it comes to providing a sporting facility . Forever squabbling over your preeeciouuuuus views and tax rates being bumped up .

Eden park suits you Kiwis :nerd: . . . . . Yeah no need to build a new waterfront stadium when a third world class - rugby park right in the middle of some houses will do the job . Just get some paint and put few more of those plastic chairs from that Red warehouse shop and that should do it for NZ's standard

Even better keep debating which stadium is better until 2011 and we will gladly host the Rugby World cup 2011 for you . Now that idea really will even save some more dollars . . . Hack you guys wont even need to spend any of your money at all !! . . . . What a great savings idea init?

As always evident the vast gulf between the Aust and the tiny NZ with their petty conservative views of life and everything else is ever so increasing .

We are not arrogant (and loud) as most you think . . . We just have the zest and can do attitude in everything . And those of you who share our way of living life just tend to jump across the ditch .

484681 2006-11-21 09:52:00 I was thinking about aussiedude's post, and decided to see what the proposed stadium would look like in Sydney. It's not perfect, but I tried to get the stadium roughly the right size relative to the Sydney Opera House.

Stadium: www.maccrazy.net
Opera House: www.maccrazy.net

I think there might be some debate in Australia if someone proposed putting a stadium where the Sydney Opera House is. Personally I don't think it looks any better there, but maybe aussiedude disagrees?

484685 2006-11-22 10:29:00 Breaking News: Stadium vote hits snag

NZ Herald Online
Nov 22, 2006

This week's vital vote on the site of the 2011 Rugby World Cup final has just hit a major snag .

An injunction was lodged on Wednesday evening with the Auckland High Court to stop an Auckland City Council vote going ahead on Thursday .

The injunction was launched by five Auckland residents who believe the Local Government Act has been breached .

They say the two weeks given by Rugby World Cup Minister Trevor Mallard to make a decision between the waterfront and Eden Park options is not enough time for public consultation required under the Act .

If the injunction is successful it will make the vote illegal and risks further delay to a stadium resolution .

An urgent hearing will take place at the high court on Thursday morning .

I can read the crystal ball .

News Release:

23 November 2006

At the high court today in Auckland, the court heard from concerned residents *cough* [namely the Eden Park Trust, under the guise of genuine residents] :groan: and after much legal litigation, the presiding Judge Eye Tayknobull dismissed the case by the residents against the Auckland Councils, stating that "the importance of fast-tracking such a project far outweighed any inconvenience to local residents" . He also stated that "for all intense and purposes,he would be at the Waterfront Stadium to support the All Blacks, and he would not entertain the idea of any further delays to such an important investment for New Zealand's future . "

It was noted by the Press Gallery that his favorite All Blacks player was Jerry Collins - Simply because he Tayksnobull! . :p

Actually,if this BS carries on much longer the Waterfront Stadium will end up in Sydney,in place of the opera house! .
