711029 2008-10-09 08:48:00 Hi, am looking at upgrading to a gaming monster. I have an ATI 4870x2 in mind but am confused by the number of mobo options. Am not looking for something that runs DDR3 ram, DDR2 is fine for now or even better DDR2 and DDR3 compatible? not too fussed on other options like firewire etc but must be Quad Core able, my budget is roughly $500.
Sorry about the short blurb, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

711030 2008-10-09 21:01:00 Do you want to overclock?

There's only one DDR2/3 mobo, and it looks crap to tell you the truth.

Almost everything is quad core capable these days.

You could go really hardcore and get a Nehalem...

CPU is about $600, MoBo is about $500. Nice and next gen monster tech. All DDR3 though.

711031 2008-10-09 21:36:00 You don't need to spend $500 on a motherboard....LOL SolMiester (139)

If you desperately want to create a monster you could though.

I wouldn't. I'd shout someone out to dinner or something if I really wanted to burn through money. Or just save it.

A nehalem would be freaking sweet though, you've got to admit.

711034 2008-10-10 07:55:00 thanks for the replies. Maybe $500 was a little over the top but Im one of those guys that for the past 10 years Ive gone on the cheap (ie. $80 mobo, $25 DDR2 1gb RAM etc etc) when upgrading my PC, I just want a decent PC that can run COD4 and Crysis in all its absolute glory on my new 22" monitor + be able to be somewhere near the top of the queue in a year or so.

Have been looking at a Q6600 CPU, a ATI 4870x2 video card, some fast DDR2 ram so any help for a mobo recommendation would be helpful? Cheers!

711036 2008-10-10 08:21:00 You'll be fine around the $200 mark.

A lot of people like these ("www.ascent.co.nz). I can't see you needing anything more really. And you could almost certainly get away with a lot less.

711037 2008-10-15 02:10:00 thanks for all the help. Bought a Asus P5Q Pro MB, a Q6600, 2x2GB Corsair DDR2 memory and an ATI 4870 card. Am very happy with the result in both COD4 and Crysis...Cheers!:clap tvgts (5773)
