486287 2006-09-28 20:50:00 The word "happy" may be problematical. Lets say "long term happiness". Otherwise "do whatever makes you happy" could be shooting up heroin, popping a traffic cop in the jaw, procreating with your best friend's partner, etc., each of which will bring short term happiness and long term sufferingAnd here we see a classic example of how personal choices are "the meaning". A junkie for example, will have what ever it is they are shooting up, snorting, smoking, or whatever as their meaning of life. It stereotypicly will mean more than any moral code, and certainly more than friends and other commodities that have become nothing more than a means to the next fix. There is no long term vision here. Next year is merely a fairy-tale, but this coming evening, and finding something to steal and sell so the cravings don't become too extreme before midnight is very very real under such a perception of life.

On the other extreme, for some the meaning of life is their belief in an afterlife. They will endure almost anything within their lifetime because of the belief that there will be reward in heaven (or whatever cultural equivalent may or may not exist.)

The worm drives helically through the wood
And does not know the dust left in the bore
Once made the table integral and good;
And suddenly the crystal hits the floor.
Electrons find their paths in subtle ways,
A massless eddy in a trail of smoke;
The names of lovers, light of other days
Perhaps you will not miss them. That’s the joke.
The Universe winds down. That’s how it’s made.
But memory is everything to lose;
Although some of the colors have to fade,
Do not believe you’ll get the chance to choose.
Regret, by definition, comes too late;
Say what you mean. Bear witness. Iterate.

486291 2006-10-31 20:48:00 Well this does seem to be a popular thread, seems I've missed the boat so far.

Continuing on the theme that our meaning is to procreate. I would say that is not an answer to the original question because the argument is circular. Because if the meaning for any individual is to produce offspring whose purpose is to produce more offspring etc on to purpetuity then there is really no meaning for an individual at all. And if we are merely meant to continue the species then I would ask why?

I think that most people offer reasons like to procreate or enjoy life as meanings for life because they've decided that there is no meaning to life and these are just something to do.

486293 2006-10-31 23:08:00 42 I believe is only in the "Life - pro' version.
"Life - lite" users have any answer < 21.
Crackers have generated a 62 meaning, but this can be regarded as spurious.
To the legal fraternity, life means "Quite a while, but more if you're poor".

486295 2006-11-01 01:08:00 Life is what we make it. Some live for excitement or stimulation, some live for religion and some live to make the world a better place for their children. The human brain is so complex that regardless of biological origins we can effectively consider our minds as having free will. The meaning of any person's life is what we decide to do with that free will. There is no one meaning of life to fit all people. TGoddard (7263)
486296 2006-11-02 05:52:00 I think that the meaning is defined by origin . If you know how you came about you'll know more about what your meaning is and decide what purpose you are going to live for .

As far as I can tell there are only two basic options to the origin of life . Either we came about by random chance or we were created by an intelligent designer(s) . These two options lead to different meanings to life .

If life came about by random chance then you can make the purpose of your life whatever you like because you don't have to give an account to anyone . But if we were created by design then we need to find out why we were made .
