| 486277 | 2006-09-27 21:28:00 | If the above is the case, then one must ask,why bother.Good question. I ask myself, why do some people bother, and totally fail to find an answer. I guess that is why some people try to find "the" meaning of life. I think immortality, and all those wonderful concepts are only achieved through our children. My son is half me. He will continue long after the maggots have lost interest in my carcass, and memory of me is long gone. Perhaps the meaning of life is to live forever through breeding? Whatever the case, the meaning is your own. It is not for others to answer the question for you, as Steve_L so rightly pointed out. |

| 486278 | 2006-09-27 21:29:00 | ... Mitch Albom wrote about his dying professor Morrie and their last lessons together in the bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie in which some interesting questions were raised. ... Albom learned from Professor Morrie that the true meanings in life are in the giving, the loving and the sharing of what you've had, which in turn live on by being passed down from generation to generation. | Strommer (42) | ||

You have to kid yourself that you live through others,I mean what is the point of the genes that you want to go on forever. |

That, as i said *could* be the meaning of life for some, and looking at the white trash this country puts out, it seems that that is all there is for many. However i did not suggest that that is "the" meaning of life for all. Everyones meaning will be different. I think we need to look at the question. By meaning of life do we mean 1. Why are we here? 2. What drives us collectively? 3. What drives us individually? 4. What, if anything, is our individual purpose? 5. What, if anything, is our collective purpose? 6. All other variations of the question, including. 7. The ultimate question. Each question has different answers, and different answers for each individual. It's long been established that once we fully define the question, then the answer might have meaning, and the only true answer is indeed 42. |

The word "happy" may be problematical. Lets say "long term happiness". Otherwise "do whatever makes you happy" could be shooting up heroin, popping a traffic cop in the jaw, procreating with your best friend's partner, etc., each of which will bring short term happiness and long term suffering. |

| 486283 | 2006-09-28 00:12:00 | The meaning of life that seems apparent in this threads seems to be dont agree, and be synical........ you cannot say your life is better than someone else's....... or worse, its yours, to live as you see fit. Hopefully that makes you happy for the long term. If it doesnt then thats your problem not mine, but telling people they are living their life / it wrong is a bit rude in my opinion, if they didnt specifically ask for you input. we each have the ability to live life as we best can for us. not someone else. Happiness is not always available, but when you have it........ hang onto it and enjoy the ride, cos you dont know how long it will last........ hopefully it will be forever and always. :D Procreation is not always a choice made by all, but for humans to continue to survive, it has to be done by some of the population of the world. there are different reasons why some people dont choose to have children, and that is their right. But id say a large portion of the population seem to think go forth and multiply is a great action....... The meaning of life to me, in my life, is happiness.............. to be shared with my children and partner.......for the long term.............. and it also helps that i love my job, and my current life status..... Take care all, live and let live peacefully...... enjoy your life, do something for you and hopefully happiness will be your friend for life. beetle |

| 486285 | 2006-09-28 06:23:00 | Then it's not really happiness then is it? You got it . But so many people chase after short term fun, ignoring the long term suffering . Smoking, for example . Of course reading Billy's jokes here on PF1 is a type of short term happiness without any suffering . |

Electrons find their paths in subtle ways, A massless eddy in a trail of smoke; The names of lovers, light of other days Perhaps you will not miss them. Thats the joke. The Universe winds down. Thats how its made. But memory is everything to lose; Although some of the colors have to fade, Do not believe youll get the chance to choose. Regret, by definition, comes too late; Say what you mean. Bear witness. Iterate. John M. Ford 1957-2006 |
