486237 2006-09-22 13:37:00 Well at least we know that left to its own devices and of its own accord the Universe will eventually create sentient beings, some of which end up deciding that there is no meaning - cool - surely that means something?

Actually I think this is a corollary of the "Uncertainty Principle", that is, the Universe as a whole can never be doing absolutely nothing or absolutely everything and must be at some state in between the two extremes but never totally predictable, and so this result is inevitable at some time or another.

"Only you and I, out under the Sky"

That sums it up for me.

486240 2006-09-22 14:33:00 I only know it from the movie, it is said by the elderly lady just after she and her young female ward/companion emerge from an echo cave where there has been some panic/chaos amongst the locals caused by the spookiness of the situation.

David Lean is a genius and has a way with scenes and words which are seldom matched.

I love "Dr Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia" having seen both of them as a teenager and "Great Expectations" as a child.

Truly a master at work.

486241 2006-09-22 15:11:00 A master indeed, zqwerty...

Do you remember the famous shot in Lawrence of Arabia when the Omar Sharif (sp?) character first appears

There's a tiny cloud of dust on the far horizon in the desert and the shot simply holds with no cutaways while a rider gets closer & closer in shimmering heat until he pulls up on his horse with a flourish in front of Peter O'Toole.
It takes a very long time in film terms. Only a brave director would risk it. But it holds attention completely in its context.
The film showed on TV about a year ago & I think the shot had been shortened from its days in theatres. I was annoyed...but who would you complain to?

And I think they were EM Forster's words. He sounds to have been rather a pain as a person, but was also a genius as a writer.
Genius doesn't always go with "nice," unfortunately. Some of them must have been hell to live with. .

486242 2006-09-22 15:24:00 Well really - why aren't youse jokers and jokeresses all in bed at this hour? I know I should be!

Anyway, nice to see EM Forster being quoted, and I'm a fan of David Lean as well. But I take my hat off to Zqwerty for the H Rider Haggard quote. Very apt, and from another classic book.

486243 2006-09-22 21:01:00 James... are you there...??

Tell us what you think about all this. What is the meaning of life for YOU ?

486244 2006-09-22 21:08:00 Can we assume you have your hands round a glass ball as you ask this question. Cicero (40)
486245 2006-09-22 22:10:00 Now James, you really did not expect :waughh: us to give deep truthful answers here on PF1, did you?

Anyhow, you know the answer: To cleanse one's karma by understanding suffering, getting in touch with your Buddha Nature, to serve others, etc .
Hi Steve . It is not that I don't want to post a reply, but just that I don't know how to post a reply!

Yeah, that has been my aim for the past few months or so until I have started to become bored by this . I think I did not fully comprehend the answer because of late I have become obsessed with helping as many people / creatures as possible . For example, I would feel very guilty if I did not save any earthworms on the walkway from being stomped by humans or eaten by birds everytime I walk to the bus bay . I guess I don't quite know the boundary of my benevolent behaviour .

On the other hand, I sometimes ponder whether interfering with the law of natural selection is a good or bad thing . If I continue to help the weak ones despite them being subjected to the punishment of Darwin, then would I be guilty of my own sin?

Lastly, I have also begun to feel bored over studying . What's the objective of studying? To get a degree, then start a family, then have children, then become old and sick and finally, die .

Cheers :)

P . S . I might have a one-on-one chat with you someday via Skype
