485668 2006-09-20 02:41:00 I am an orcon user and am happy with the service i get, so don't want to change providers

My question is...

Is this something that will be available from other providers as well, i have had a quick squizz at the orcon site and see no mention of faster plans, (mind you can't find much as it's had a redesign since my last visit)

Cheers

485669 2006-09-20 05:25:00 In my opinion, Telecom is the worst company in NZ for customer service. The news keeps proving it. I have a good few words to describe my feelings toward them at the moment, but they are not suitable for this public forum. :angry jermsie (6820)
485670 2006-09-20 08:26:00 Xtra sent me a letter a few days ago and said that they could not give me the 3.5 MB/128 Kps that I have been paying for (ie Explorer plan). I agreed saying that they were not giving me much different download speed than 1.1 MB each day. We agreed that it would be best for me to go onto the Go plan and get a refund of $300 +.
It does mean that I will have to watch my usage as occasionally I have gone over the cap for that plan - not much, but still appreciably so.

Would rather continue paying for Explorer and get that speed - but them's the breaks !! :groan:

485671 2006-09-20 09:09:00 What I want to know is seeing as I got a perfect 2Mbps before their last speed increase, and after their speed increase - bumping it up to 3.5Mbps I then get 600kbps, what speed will I get when it goes to 7.6????

Dialup speed?:dogeye:

485672 2006-09-20 10:13:00 Clear/Paradise/PDQ Turbo 10G $52 3.5Mbps 10GB
Maxnet/Dash $54 3.5Mbps 10GB
Inspire/Bitstream 3584 $55 3.5Mbps 10GB

As usual not all plans are available in all areas of this Godsown country.
It rather depends on where you live, how far from the exchange etc.

Ordinary 56 K Modems used to give you anything between 14.4 and 49 or so.
If you were in a rural area electric fences gave interference and that is why I bought a Dynalink External Modem. I now use this for Faxes and answerphone with software.

Currently with Xtra broadband for internet.

On another note I see fibre optic cable being laid between Mangakino and Tokoroa. I recognise this cable when I see it as I once worked For Pirelli Cables in Sydney, Australia.

485674 2006-09-21 04:35:00 Inspire/Bitstream ADSL $95 3.5Mbps 10GB
ISPNZ/Bband Pro ADSL $99 3.5Mbps 10GB
Webworld/Express ADSL $100 3.5Mbps 10GB

485675 2006-09-21 04:50:00 Gotta love Telstras 10mbit cable service.
I get around 7-9mbit downloads on www.nzdsl.co.nz and about 1.2mbit up.
when i seed on bittorrent (hardly ever do it now) i get the full 2mbit upload speeds. Nice 40gig cap, $3 per 2gig excess, with phone for $131 a month.
Every plan xtra has that costs $80 or more charges excess bandwidth at 2c/MB.

for $79.99 from xtra you get 3.5/512 10GB excess charged at 2c/MB + however much they charge for a phoneline.
for $81.90 from telstra you get 4/2 10gig excess charged at $2.95 per gig with phoneline.

with telstra you download 10gig extra and pay $29.50, with telecom download just 1 gig extra and youll have to give up half your liver

i had 4/2 for a month and so long as i didnt download from slow servers i was getting 350+kB/s. Never got to push it to its limits like i did with unmetered 2mbit.
Just gotta love how you always get those high speeds with cable, sure its not cheap but once you get to a certain price it gets far cheaper than adsl, very quickly.

The real thing i want to know is if this will affect the price my parents pay for our internet connection, if it took the price down to less than $100 it would own, as thats what we were paying for 128k back in 2002.

Yea I am on the same 10MB 40 gig cable plan, these connections just don't give a dam what time of the day it is, its just full tit all day long. I can actually download at 9Mb and still be playing an online RPG with next to no lag increase.

BTW an extra 10 gig on our plan is $14.75(5x$2.95) not $29. Not the cheapest but not bad either.

cough oh yea wrong thread for this conversation :)
