711321 2008-10-12 05:17:00 When I tried it I found the pins on the enclosure are differnt from the drive from the laptop.
Is there some sort of adapter available?

So the drive has pins? SATA drives don't. And yes there is usually an adapter thingy, it looks like its part of the drive but if you look carefully you'll see a join line, and it can be removed.

Or take it into a shop and get them to retrieve your stuff........

711322 2008-10-12 07:08:00 If you are unlikely to have any other use for the adapter, you may be better off taking the hard drive into a computer shop to save the data. If the drive is knackered they may not even charge you. Driftwood (5551)
711323 2008-10-12 07:38:00 jwil1 and pctek,I found out how to remove the adapter. It was well hidden and required more force than I initially liked to use on such a delicate piece of equipment. Kind of different to the 100+hp variable speed elelctric motors I normally work on where a hammer and a prybar are the main tools.

I managed to recover what I wanted and then formatted the drive in the hope that my sensitive business data has been erased sufficiently.

Thanks again to all

That lappie died and what they could recover was corrupted.

711326 2008-10-13 19:43:00 plus it depends on how good your insurance company is
mine is happy with a photo of the item, then trying to recover the data is up to you

must depend on your policy, check it out, give them a call
