711557 2008-10-11 11:05:00 My son has 2 computers both running XPPro (One with Eset and the other Avast)
Originally I had both these pcs at my place and they were both working fine networked (cable) with my other machines on xtra broadband.
The sons house is on a farm in the wop wops and can't get broadband so we have set up both pcs on xtra dial up. Plugging them in individually they will both get on the internet okay but only one at a time as only one phone line.

I have tried networking them using the set up wizard in xp on both but can't get them able to see each other or connect to internet.
Used a 5 port switch and ethernet cable to join the pair and the lights at top of switch seem to indicate that the switch is working okay.
Are there other settings that may need changing that the wizard does not do?
And I realise that it may be getting blocked by a firewall (Windows or AV) but not sure on how to proceed to check or change this if it is so.
I have asked Mr Google and done some notes which may help but as the farm is a long drive from where I live, I'm trying to get as much info together before making the trip again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated....Thank you

711558 2008-10-11 16:48:00 DON'T use the wizard, its hopeless as **** on a bull

Put the ips in manually, under the LAN properties / TCP/IP on both.

Make sure file sharing is enabled. Enable ICS under the main PC's dialup

Make sure, both of them have the same workgroup name

Can you explain where I go to get the right IP Address for each PC?

711560 2008-10-11 19:30:00 You type the IP's in.

On the main PC, go into its dialup / properties / advanced

Tick the first option under Internet connection sharing, it'll become 192.168.0.1

(This will be WHY you cant get both on the internet, Internet Connection Sharing MUST be ticked / enabled on the main PC, so the networked PC can get on the internet)

On the networked PC, go to Network connections (or double on the LAN icon on the taskbar / properties / TCP/IP)

Change it to use the following ip, type in something like 192.168.0.2

Press tab. For the gateway, type in 192.168.0.1

For the DNS preferred primary server IP address, type in 202.27.158.40

For the secondary ip address, type in 202.27.156.72 then OK

Thats it

Windows firewall, or an AV program shouldnt block it
