| 710913 | 2008-10-09 01:09:00 | Hi all The wife's old laptop was always nagging about installing SP2 for XP, so a few days ago I did it (wish I hadn't bothered). I used the official Microsoft CD, but during the final stage (cleanup) it stopped with an error. I tried it again, with the same result. After each attempt the remaining hard disk space reduced by 1 GB – starting with only 10.7GB free, then down to 8.7 I restarted the machine anyway, SP2 was reported as resident, but Avast was indicated by Windows to be inactive - so I did a system restore to get it going again. No SP2 now, but the disc space is still down. I've removed the folder that SP2 generated and run CCleaner, but that made little difference. I don't want to risk installing SP2 again on that machine, but how would I regain the disk space? |

| 710914 | 2008-10-09 01:15:00 | There might be a folder/s in C:\Windows called $NTServicePackUninstall$ or something. They are hidden by default - how big are they? BTW Windows XP SP2 is no longer the latest SP - SP3 is. Get it from Windows Update. |

| 710916 | 2008-10-09 01:22:00 | Yes - you have to have SP1 first though. Try running SpaceMonger (www.sixty-five.cc) to find a large folder. |

I would suggest you install IE7 1st if you use it otherwise the IE 7 install fail. There seem to be issues installing IE7 after SP3 has been deployed to a XP machine. Cheers, |

| 710918 | 2008-10-09 02:11:00 | That Spacemonger is pretty cool. Didn't find anything unusual however, although the system restore folder had 6.2GB of data, even though it's limited to 3GB. Guess that's because tha data is compressed. And cheers for the tip RE IE7. Still reluctant to try any further SP installs in case cleanup fails again....:( |

| 710919 | 2008-10-09 02:18:00 | The easiest way to do it, would be to slipstream it. Only thing is, you'll have to do a clean install to do it You dont need SP1 or 2, just SP3. You can also slipstream IE and WMP (and updates) Saves a lot of time after windows has been installed |
