You can get CD Changers that come with their own remote control and you tune it into your receiver on an FM radio frequency. These will work with any FM tuner but then you aren't getting CD quality. If you buy a new head unit / receiver that says it says it plays CDs then there will be a slot on it to put CDs in and you don't need a CD changer as well. For about $400 you should be able to get one that can play MP3s as well. Meaning you could put about 120 songs on one CD in MP3 format with your PC and then play it in the car. |

I went for this for the Ipod interface. A lot of manufacturers are now offering an Ipod interface, but the Alpine one struck me as best - certainly the fastest, particularly with the Percentage Search function. I hardly ever touch the iPod these days. Just sits in the glove box doling out the music. There are even better units out there, even better Alpine units. For $400, though, you should be able to get MP3/WMA playback - look for Pioneer or Alpine for good quality and functionality. Just remembered this (www.dse.co.nz) If you're not brand-fussy, this might be worth a look. You can use USB drives and memory cards to play your MP3s, and you can also record MP3s to memory cards from the radio or CD. Don't know about quality of the unit, but for features, esp. at $200, it looks like a pretty good deal. |

You will probably notice that with a new headunit the sound will be better than the factory one as aftermarket units tend to have more power. If you get a Headunit that plays CD's you won't need a changer unless you want the convenience of cd changer. For $400 you can get quite a good headunit, they tend to start from about $200 for a decent branded unit. Stay away from cheap knockoffs and "no name" brands as they will just disappoint and be more trouble than they are worth. Go for a brand like Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Sony, Panasonic etc. If you want some more info on In Car Entertainment head over to the forums at www.nzicemag.co.nz as there are a few people there who really no there stuff and you might be able to get a deal from one of the retailers (depending on where you live) HTH |

| 486625 | 2006-09-25 04:32:00 | OK . . . so now does anyone have any ideas on a good brand for a 4-track player? I am taking the Muntz 45 RPM record player out from under my dashboard and want to upgrade . Should I go for dual speakers or just stay with the one? I replaced my Edison Cylinder® player with this when I upgraded a few years ago . Can I get my initial investment back if I sell it on E-bay? The wind-up mainspring was new a year ago . |

When I was looking at head units last year, the only ones that would play mp3s off a flash drive were the cheap no-name brands. Has that changed yet? |

| 486629 | 2006-09-25 08:57:00 | FWIW I have had plenty of good experiances with the cheap "for You" branded MP3 players off trademe.....they go for around $120-$150 for the MP3 player units. Had one in my mini for over a year & it didn't skip a beat (even though it was bumpy as) & I have had the same model units installed in my brothers vehicle plus other one's I have sold. Not had any issues at all. Im also a fan of Pioneer head units.....IF I was in the market at the moment I'd go for the DEH2850MP :) Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 486630 | 2006-09-25 09:37:00 | when we talk of a "changer" is that so that you can play chose to play from a number of stacked CD's. I presume so. Have found that the ability to play one cd and just change it is fine, though I have to say that these days I play my iPod instead -- using an FM tuner, which is great ! :D Nevertheless I have a JVC car radio with cd player which I bought off Parallel-Imported for less than $400 mentioned. It is really good and can play MP3's when I get organised. There are not many things that I would buy from Parallel-Imported as I normally value the after sales service too much to buy from them (peace of mind !), --- however I thought - what can go wrong with a radio/CD player !? :horrified So my suggestion, unless, you want the ability to change Cd's at the flip of a switch, is to get something similar to mine. I will even race upstairs and get the model number for you, if you are interested. cheers Misty  |
