712022 2008-10-13 22:22:00 Hi there, I want to create a one click batch file to backup files to USB HD in Vista. The Vista backup gives very little control over what gets backed up so I dont really trust it. Ive been using xxcopy in XP with great success

any suggestions on what to use??

Ive tried batch files with...
xxcopy: has vista issues
xcopy: has bugs :insufficient memory error(en.wikipedia.org), now replaced in vista with robocopy(??)
robocopy:looked promising but hid the backup dir, then I couldnt delete the
backup dir (had to format the HD)
synctoy v2: command line option is there: but a little issue where if the backup is deleted it either errors out(needing the pair to be recreated in the GUI) or dosnt recopy the files.

712023 2008-10-13 22:27:00 IFAIK, Vista does have DOS, therefore no batch files....There is a tonne of free backup software out there, just do a search on google, its your friend...LOL SolMiester (139)

hi there, thanks for the reply
Vista does have a cmd command (the near equiv of DOS) so batch files are still usable.

I have installed Cobian, I want a batch file solution(run from batch file may be possible with Cobian as well)

Google often isnt my friend, just too many 'hits', many of which are retailers sites, warez sites and questions without answers.

Yes - I've written batch files to do backup in Vista before - not sure what you're on about Sol.

One tool you should look at (if you decide Cobian isn't any good) is Microsoft SyncToy, which can be scripted using a batch file. You configure what you want to back up, and where to using the GUI, then call it on the command line if you want to schedule it.

712028 2008-10-14 00:00:00 I have used a few vbs scripts, they work great, but are very hard to write fro the average punter (me) Digby (677)
712029 2008-10-14 00:02:00 I tried the same thing using Vista x64
There is just no comparison to XP running xxcopy that i have found yet
If someone has the quick solution let me know also
I am trying to backup from a network drive to the vista machine
Thanks

I tried synctoy v2 in a batch file: it works....
...except if for whatever reason the backup (or part of the backup) is deleted then either it wont re-copy allready synced ( & backup deleted) files or requires a new sync pair to be setup.

Has anyone tried using XP-pro's backup in Vista. I read that it works in Vista(??), not sure how to get it onto Vista thou.
