What OS is the old apple running? The new one will have a program called migration assistant in it.
you can use firewire
It seems to ask for firewire

Its the same as /home in linux -- essentially its your "Documents and Settings" folder. Provided she re-installs any relevant apps, it should *just work* :)

the assistant moves over User accounts, applications, network and computer settings, files and volumes.
Me personally prefers to start off fresh.

on which bit. The assistant will transfer all user settings, network settings, all your programs over. More or less it will put what ever was on the old mac into the new one.
I like starting off with a clean system, gives me a chance to cull some of the crap out
