487484 2006-09-26 07:59:00 Hi,

I would appreciate clarification of exactly what the email addresses we have in the PF1 profiles can be used for. The privacy policy on the site states that

"Fairfax Business Media occasionally uses email and subscriber lists on behalf of companies who wish to mail our subscribers. We believe direct communication can be an efficient way to present our subscribers with information relevant to them."

However, the forum rules say

"PressF1 user profiles are used for NO other function than managing PressF1. Your email address will not be included in any mail list other than administrative emails relating to the forums. Your email address will not be given to a third party."

Which of these is correct? They seem to conflict. I also don't intend to leave a valid address in my profile if there's the chance I could be spammed.

487486 2006-09-26 08:17:00 The PressF1 forum rules seem very clear over this. That statement has been in the rules since day 1 and nobody has been spammed.

The subscription part of FairfaxBM is a separate entity.

I will alert Bruce to this post so that he can officially clarify your question.

487488 2006-09-26 21:56:00 As far as I'm aware there has been no chnage in our policy with regards to PressF1 emails. Also, as noted it is stated in the rules when you sign up that they are used for no other purposes. The Privacy Policy is a site-wide - i.e that is for the whole network of sites and emails are collected in other places, eg the email newsletters, where that clause applies. I know that a few years ago, when a marketing type wnated to use F1 emails, we shot them down and pointed out the forum only works if people are confident their emails aren't going to be used beyond it.

Also, from a technical viewpoint, your emails are staored in VB and have not, to my knowledge, been exported out to anything else.
