long live Top Gear !

btw people actullay do own and drive cars faster than 200km/h. just look at the worlds fastest road race. people drive their home cars (ie not custom race cars) in it.

487358 2006-09-26 12:41:00 If banning it would put an end to all the mentally retarded drivers on the road in New Zealand then I'd say yes.
But it won't so I say keep it as it's an entertaining program.
Stupid people will always do stupid things whether you encourage them or not.
If they had a program on cliff-jumping you can't blame the broadcasters if loads of people decided to jump off cliffs after watching it.

487359 2006-09-26 22:24:00 If I was given a scooter or a Porsche turbo... I think I would take the....um... Porsche.

Now you tell the car marketing people that a car is just a tin box

Well I would myself take the Porsche - but after admiring the workmanship in design and manufacture - sell it and buy a Toyota. Unfortunately scooter or motorcycling days are behind me now so the 50cc Honda is out, but I do fancy one of those mobile scooters - shove a Kawasaki 250cc 2str engine in it, and I'll have something much better than a Porsche!

And yes I have told several car marketing people that a car is just a tin box for transport. They often agree with me - despite the car magazines - love of classic cars (now there's a conflict in terms!) boring car races etc etc the majority of people are quite normal and see a car as a convenience nothing else.

487360 2006-09-26 23:25:00 While there is a link between faster vehicles and road carnage, there is a far stronger link between stupid morons trying to prove something in whatever piece of **** they can get their hands on, and road carnage.

Top gear is about people who know what they are doing testing vehicles to the limits, including economy runs. Speed is tested on closed roads IIRC.

487361 2006-09-27 03:14:00 Ditto.
A car is merely a tin box you sit in and it takes you from place to place.
Why people spend money on something like a Porsche when for a minute fraction of the money they could have a Honda scooter giving 10 times the fun beats me.

A car is merely a box?.......Ok bud!

I'm sorry, but only geeks and gay men think of cars like that.

487362 2006-09-27 03:19:00 That sorta sounds like saying a computer is just a computer . . . .

We all use it for the same reasons? so get a cheap tin puter . . . . . . . . . yeah sure . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Well I'm not gay - so that makes me a geek.
Best thing anybodies said about me for ages.
But I still cannot get interested in tin boxes.
However a few years ago in the UK a friend took me for a ride in his box. It was a open three wheeler like the old Morgan.
But home built. They were very popular in the area - you take an old Citreon 2CV (I hope I have the model right) - use the front wheel drive for the same purpose. Only one wheel at the back and a very cut down sporty body.
I saw the fun in it and also was able to view other examples that had been even better built.
I'm rather surprised to see nobody do the same thing here.

487364 2006-09-27 03:43:00 Zhe gads!

Sounds more like something from Monster Garage, than something top gear would be testing, however i have to wonder about the wisdom of 3 wheels? I suppose it would be OK so long as there was nothing (or no-one) heavy being transported at the back

EDIT: I have just come to realise that I used 150Kmh as an example... now I do not encourage this sort of speed on the road, these sorts of speeds are to be done in controlled environments such as track days and not on public roads.

If a car is still stable flying round a corner at 150Km/h, then it should be fine with anything you ask of it in normal road conditions. If not, perhaps it could be considered error prone? personthingy (1670)
