712249 2008-10-15 01:50:00 Does it still restart any more?
If so, you may need to disable automatic restart on system failure.
Right click My Computer>Properties>Advanced tab> Under Startup and Recovery click "settings">Untick "Automatically Restart">Click Ok>Click Ok again

To do the Disk Check within windows try booting in Safe mode, or if you can, get your hands on a UBCD or UBCD4Win

Thank you very much for the advice on disabling automatic restart - I had no idea why the computer was doing that or how to stop it.

Last night I defragmented the hard disk with JKDefrag, and - surprisingly - it seems to have solved most of the problems. Windows now loads on at normal speed, the computer can hibernate without locking up and I haven't gotten any more blue screen error messages or sudden restarts. But I don't understand how on earth just defragmenting the hard drive could fix so many problems (even though my HD hasn't been defragmented for ages). Can anyone explain?

I have yet to try another disk check, but I will try again in Safe mode like you said.

712251 2008-10-15 15:40:00 I haven't heard about drives fixed by defragging before but defragging does make the system run a bit faster.
I also read this on a website, it may help you decide when to defrag

My own rule of thumb: if the defrag takes longer than an hour you need to do it more often. If it takes less than 10 minutes, defrag less often.

Also-how fragmented was it orginally?
