2006-09-28 08:03:00 | Where's a proper speed on this poll? :D How about 10Mb/sec download speed, and 2 Mb/sec upload? Is cable being ignored here or something?

2006-09-28 11:20:00 | maybe it was left out to comfort those who can't get it or they'll feel bad because they have to live with other slow speeds.. or just to keep them ignorent..ignorance is a bliss~

2006-09-29 04:25:00 | 4M+down / 2M+up, no caps...having copper wire problems right now making my speed a little slow. 4 twisted pairs with only 1 good wire and 6 really bad wires, 1 fair quality if the ringer doesn't destroy the dielectric. Will be on FIOS soon for some real speed.

2006-09-29 04:42:00 | ......... Will be on FIOS soon for some real speed. What is FIOS?????? Something that i am wondering, is why on earth we in NZ were held back from our lines running at maximum possible speed in the first place?

2006-09-29 05:17:00 | My theoretical broadband speed is supposed to be 2mb's but i'm lucky if i average about 32k and I'm only about 400 meters away from the exchange:mad: As you can tell, i can't wait for the next months speed increase to full speed:groan: I'd say FIOS is Fibre Optics. Be nice if they rolled out 110km's of it from auckland out to my house for me but somehow i just can't see it happening.

2006-09-29 16:17:00 | All new homes in the area are getting Fiber Optics for everything..television, phone, puters, etc...and I will be getting an update to it as Verizon has no purpose in replacing my bad copper.... The new housing projects around my area will bring FIOS really close and it's just a hop-skip-and-a-jump to my front door. As I write, there are crews pulling fiber all around me....I MAY be on it soon! Hooray!!!:D

In the master plan, there will be only 17 Exchanges, and fiber run from them to every little middle of nowhere place, and copper for the last few hundred meters. Telecom are about half way through this rebuild. Your turn is coming. You are going to get almost exactly what you sarcasticly said would be nice. I suspect that your "exchange" is such a pile of obsolete pudding that telecom plan to turn it into a store room once sufficient fiber has been run into paradise lost, and till then no upgrades or non-urgent repairs will be done. |

2006-09-29 20:36:00 | You are 400 mtres from a what???? Well i think its an exchange:o It's one of those telecom boxes they have on the side of the road. The large rectangular boxes with the front opening doors.

2006-09-29 20:54:00 | Well i think its an exchange:o It's one of those telecom boxes they have on the side of the road . The large rectangular boxes with the front opening doors . Chances are it nothing less than a glorified patch bay where bulk multi paired copper from far away is connected to the local pairs that actually do something within the local multi cored cables . Chances are that the obsolete exchange you are closest to is well outside of your town . The box will at some stage be replaced with another one . The existing box will be dug up , moved forward, a new one put behind it, and the cables transferred over, with forgivable disruption . The new ones are of similar function, except that they are fed with fiber, and perform somewhat better, with far more flexibility and room for expansion . From my humble observations, Telecom have been keen to upgrade in areas like Christchurch first, even before Auckland, which of course has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that customers here have the option to change to an alternative telco if dissatisfied :p However, your turn will come . If your anything like me, you will be waiting impatiently :)
