489396 2006-10-05 20:30:00 I've seen this email floating around for a few months now, and it sounds like a hoax. It claims that a "new' method of car-jacking has emerged, targeted at women, where a piece of paper is placed on the rear windscreen of a the car, and when the driver gets out to remove the paper, the car-jacker leaps in and drives away. The purported author is Ministry of Justice, and gives the website www.fines.govt.nz. This appears to be a legitimate website.

I haven't been able to find any evidence one way or the other - nothing to say it is a hoax, and nothing on the MoJ or Fines website to suggest that it is genuine. I haven't seen or heard anythign in the news, either, which I would have expected if the problem was as prevalent as the email suggests.

Does anyone know anything about this? I've had a few friends adamant that it is genuine, but I can't shake off my cynicism...

489398 2006-10-05 22:15:00 You're absolutely right. I had tried google, but used too many search terms, and was trying to find something in NZ...

This was a pretty good account - www.towncrier.org.uk

489399 2006-10-06 02:13:00 Just remember ... if there is a piece of paper on your rear window, lock the doors if you get out to remove it. Naughty people might get the idea from PressFF1, through the strenuous efforts of the Yahoo spiders which will have read this, and probably PMed their friends with the idea. Graham L (2)
489400 2006-10-06 03:49:00 I would drive away anyway. I like to see how fast I can go before the offending item flys off :waughh: dolby digital (5073)

Haha, I'd stand there and cheer them off if they thought my car was worth stealing....

489402 2006-10-06 04:46:00 Very few cars have rear wipers that could hold a piece of paper in place. I don't imagine that hatchbacks and liftbacks (that do have rear wipers) would be that tempting for theft. Therefore, I think that, on balance, it is likely to be a hoax email.
