488697 2006-10-03 02:17:00 This is of course insane advice. Getting to know the dog :- Well if it's a Pit bull then you know all you need to know. Respect it for what it is YES. It is a pit bull and therefore extremely dangerous and unreliable, liable to go off at any time.
I prefer BILLY Ts advice

Incidentally - in answer to "dvm" - the family member is female and in fact I do remember many of the owners of pitbulls in the English papers were also female. No doubt many readers will also have seen the shot on TV where an American lady(?) encouraged her pit bull to attack a lady from the American Animal Society. It was horrific.

OK...a LITTLE off there if you have the same story as I have in memory....

The owner/woman of questionable sexuality didn't call her dog off the woman...she stood by as it ate the face off the old lady....

This occurred in San Francisco where gender is not politically correct conversation, and the poor old soul was just trying to get into her apartment when the dogs attacked her.

The "person" who may or may not have had testosterone-producing glands in a previous life didn't even pull the leashes to take the dogs off the senior citizen. The dog handler went into her apartment after the attack and didn't even give it a second thought.

There are other heralded stories of rots and pits that are kept for "personal protection" in cities large and small in the US...mostly owned my persons trying to create an aire of respectability for themselves by parading these loaded, cocked fouling pieces in the face of everyone.

Again, living here in lawyer land, we hear a lot of liability cases from these people who proffer their "right to bear arms" , the 2nd amendment of the Bill Of Rights as protected by the US Constitution.

Utter rubbish !! Any dog can be trained to be a nasty dog that attacks without provocation, don't single out specific breeds. As I said earlier if a dog is treated well, trained correctly, socialised etc etc then they are not a problem. The problem with Pit bulls is that they have this "tough" image therefore knobheads who like to think of themselves as tough buy them and do not rasie and treat them correctly - a self perpetuating problem. Have you ever met a nasty poodle or dalmation ? More than likely, again cos they have not been raised correctly - dog breeds are not nasty or nice, they are all instinctive animals that are moulded into who they are by their owners.

And no I do not have a pit bull. I have a hunterway.

488699 2006-10-03 03:59:00 Furthermore, one of the main issues with owning some dogs that are not fond of other dogs is that idiots with their labs etc think they are being friendly when they let them come bouncing over and start pestering the sh*t out of the other dog. Again what would your reaction be if somebody came over and started annoying the hell out of you when your trying to mind your own business ?

capiche ?

488700 2006-10-03 04:05:00 You're lucky! I had heard that pit bulls also had to be de-legged to stop them running after people. You must have got yours before the recent law change. If you have to de-leg him, you can always strap the torso on a skateboard.

The dog must be registered, it must be desexed, it has to have a chip inserted, the property must be fenced safely, the dog must be muzzled if out, a certificate registering the dog as dangerous will be issued.
Also I have been told that the person who supplied the dog could be charged as breeding is illegal.
If the family member sells the dog is she laying herself open to a charge of illegal trading in this type of animal?

488701 2006-10-03 04:46:00 Jonp - quote "Ensure that anybody who meets the dog is aware that they must treat the dog with respect". What utter crap. Since when? Who's rule book are you reading? Scouse (83)
488702 2006-10-03 06:34:00 scouse - take the qoute in the context it was written. teach your kids to repsect dogs and not to runover to the dog and try and pull them by the ears / tail as many toddlers do. They must greet the dog in a calm respectful manner. easy !! jonp (7517)

Incredible. I suppose jonp would also treat a Polar bear or shark with the same care and expect to get away with it. Despite the numerous spelling mistakes etc I feel jonp is a reasonably intelligent person - certainly a caring and sympathetic one - but utterly out of this world if he thinks his advice is sound. It is a lesson to us all that even if we hate doing it - strong tough laws are still needed to protect people from their own folly. Shame!
I seem to have started something with this thread but still do not know the answer to my main query. Is it illegal to trade in pit bull dogs?

488705 2006-10-03 07:56:00 JonP is sprouting the same kind of crud that the typical owners of this breed display. Love to know where he gets his info from.

Pitbulls should rightly be banned from human society, or at the very least be treated with the same restrictions as any vicious wild animal.

488706 2006-10-03 08:02:00 Why don't we just legislate the neutering of the owners?

No one would own a pit Bull then....
