| 712465 | 2008-10-15 06:41:00 | I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my acer 5101 laptop with 3 GB RAM. Every time i try to use a windows program (eg browsing files/folders) and then exit the window, explorer.exe says 'windows explorer has stopped working' and then restarts the program. It doesn't do it for any other non windows programs like firefox. I have scanned with avast (and boot scan), super anti spyware, eset online scanner and have found nothing. I have also cleaned with ccleaner and also used it to repair some registry files, but still nothing. My firewall is 'Comodo Firewall Pro' Another problem which may or may not be related is that after the laptop has been turn off for a while (eg. turned off over night) and then when i turn it back on the computer turns on but the screen stays off, restarting the computer again fixes it but it does it every day. Below is a Hijackthis log: note: OccultWatcher.exe is a program i have installed. | 712466 | 2008-10-15 06:50:00 | I know Avast (ashserv.exe) can make my computer in XP freeze. When you go through folders in XP. Its happened here, and I have to kill my computer, then the icons disappear. Sometimes the desktop screen icons (and taskbar) disappear altogether (there's nothing on the screen at all). This is a known issue with Avast. I posted a thread on their forum. And by the looks of it, they have no fix. This may also apply to Vista, since youre using Avast as well Disable indexing in Windows search, whatever its called Uninstall all versions of Java, yours is out of date. Link below Tick these then tick fix checked Close browsers O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe" O9 - Extra button: Skype - {77BF5300-1474-4EC7-9980-D32B190E9B07} - C:\Program Files\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\SkypeIEPlugin.dll (file missing) |

| 712467 | 2008-10-15 07:12:00 | Seen this once - didn't have avast - Had Nor:yuck: - In the case I mentioned I turned off UAC and it fixed it. Go intot he control Panel, select user accounts Click Turn User Account Control on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK. Reboot - See if it does anything. Also open the Programs and features - look for a program called "Windows Warning" - if its there select it and click uninstall, it reads you have to reboot to uninstall but select no and click uninstall using recommended action. |

| 712468 | 2008-10-15 07:20:00 | Have you looked in the Event Viewer for any error messages? You can find the Event Viewer under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Have a look at Windows Logs > Application. |

| 712469 | 2008-10-15 10:49:00 | I looked in the event viewer and found the error for this. As below: Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918e5d, faulting module iefdm2.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x48588784, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x038d16ce, process id 0x4c0, application start time 0x01c92eb259de361d. I looked up the file iefdm2.dll_unloaded on google and found it was to do with free download manager. So i uninstalled it and the problem is fixed. Will try installing it again tomorrow and see what happens. |
