| 489292 | 2006-10-05 04:46:00 | There was a point in the previous version of the thread where it was pointed out that dogs might defend themselves if their tales are pulled, so on and so forth. Even my geriatric puppy (pugwash.orcon.net.nz) has snapped at a 2 year old who thought it was funny to pull the tail and watch the dog yelp and start to growl. (I removed the 2 year old and it's mother) However, while most dogs will snap at and perhaps frighten a 2 y that causes it intentional and ongoing pain, they wont rip it's face off with little or no warning. And yes, i have to agree. A pitbull only goes to prove the owners insecurity, and is just like the American gun of protection in that it is more likely to wound or kill the owner, or the owners family, than actually prevent anyone else from doing the same. |

| 489293 | 2006-10-05 06:51:00 | Hey there. Well, I know no one on this forum, nor what the usual topics are like. I was searching for "pit bull" on Google NZ to see at least a representative of how negative (or not... sure) NZ media is. Everyone here who's determined pit bulls are naturally unstable dogs... What is this based on? Reading a report of dog attacks occasionally? Did it never occur to you that often the people reporting a "pit bull" wouldn't have a clue what a purebred looks like? Nor that the fact only (or mostly) irresponsible owners own pit bulls precisely because of this kind of media? Pit bull are NOT "bred to be aggressive". They're bred to be aggressive towards dogs. If anything, they have the harshest selection process of all for human aggression, because if a ref gets bitten splitting up a dog fight that dog will be put down. I do not have a pit bull, but I would like one one day. Not because they look "tough". Most of the people wanting a pit bull as an ego-booster want some 40 kilo monster. I have a 42 kilo American Bulldog (very different from a pittie), I don't need a monster dog. A pit bull should be 15-30 kilos: they are actually small dogs. I like them because they are attractive (I like muscular dogs), incredibly friendly and expressive dogs. They are likely to be at least selectively dog aggressive as adults, but that is easy to control so long as someone's off-leash dog isn't leaping all over your dog. I wrote here because I truly wish we had a support system in New Zealand for a breed that is historically so abused and neglected. The SPCA won't rehome pit bulls, Animal Control won't rehome pit bulls. You can't even advertise for one on TradeMe. So when do responsible owners get a chance to own pit bulls? Not looking to get flamed, though I expect it. I truly want people to just think before they judge, and not use statements about eating babies and comparing them to someone on P (because of course methampetamine didn't exist before the P craze!) with a knife. I'll be really happy if someone actually reads all of this, and thinks about it.:D |
