491057 2006-10-15 23:28:00 I suppose now is as good a time as any... I sent Chilling an iso image of RC2 Vista to upload to a server. Package arrived and he is still uploading. Chilling will let you all know when the upload is complete
Iso works perfectly, tested and installed his version of the disc, so noone should have any issues

whooooo! :D I was right!

491058 2006-10-16 02:57:00 Its getting there, only about 400MB to go... Ive had a friend assist me with the upload too (Burned 7 RAR files and took them to his place to upload concurrently there)

I got a notice from my webspace host telling me not to run a proxy process from a shell, it apparently can put too much load onto the server. Wonder how they'll like me un-rar'ing 2.6GB worth :D

491061 2006-10-16 09:00:00 Looks like it'll be all done uploaded and extracted by morning. No gaurantees when I'll wake up though but if you PM myself or The_End_Of_Reality now showing you're interested then if you've done, say, over 150 posts, then we'll reply with the http URL for you to just click & download away. It should allow around 5 connections per-IP for apps like GetRight.

Cheers

Chill.

491063 2006-10-16 20:59:00 Wow, thats the most uploading Ive ever done!

We have liftoff, and the only http download for this that I know of ;)

I downloaded VMWare Server last night to install it on, will see how we go...

491064 2006-10-22 03:43:00 w00t!

I have Vista RC2 installed in the latest VMWare Server 1.0 (Free!)

The RC1 download key which I got from the MS site that anybody can get worked fine with it...

Installation requires something like Daemon Tools or Alcohol 52%
Have two IDE drives connected in the VM, both connected at login.
Emulate the VMWare ISO in the first in VMWare, have Alcohol emulate the other.
Make the 2nd IDE drive in VMWare connect exclusively on boot WITHOUT legacy emulation to the Alcohol drive

Just after I clicked "Install Vista" when it had booted I then disconnected the first IDE drive and didnt even get an error, saw it flashing down the bottom-right of the VMWare console indicating it'd found the 2nd drive and was using it :) there may be a simpler way but this just worked for me!

It appears to create all disks as Dynamic, so this rules out FAT32 as an option. Im assuming this because it had "Extend" as an option for exiting partitions (My VM had none), but its just a guess.

Installation needs 6825MB free space so a 7GB+ virtual HDD is advisable, although the recommended free space is 8302MB. After my 3rd disk creation and restart (I began with a 5GB virtual hdd) I made mine 10GB just to be safe!

Installation was un-eventful, I came back after a while and was prompted for a username (This time they ask for a PWD also!!). Choosing default desktop background was cool, some nicer pix than XP came with.

The theme highly resembled my favorite KDE "Plastik" theme, so that was a welcome change!

It prompts me about Auto-updates as XP does when slipstreamed with SP 2, then did a performance check on my box, Im guessing to tune certain window effects etc.

It had a lil think then it prompted me for the password for my one user and that was it :) setup the default desktop settings for my user and I was away laughing!

It didnt think it had a network adapter so I tried to install VMWare Tools but nothing ever happened during the two installation attempts, even after waiting for 2 hours. I found the following on another site:
*******************************
"Also the Network interface problem is really easy to work around. Just change the emulated NIC to Intel e1000. Shut down your Vista VM and exit your VMware product or unload your virtual machine, depending on the VMware product you use. Then edit the .VMX file. Locate the line 'ethernet0.present'. Add a new line just below: ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000". That's all. Boot your Vista VM and it should come up with a new driver installation for the Intel e1000 NIC."
*******************************

This sorted my problem and Im now browsing the 'net on it fine! Now to get it setup and take it round to a mates place and try hooking up video streaming from RC2 to the Xbox 360!
