| 713740 | 2008-10-23 03:31:00 | Im looking at buying a laptop/ notebook (Brand has not been considered yet) some laptop manufacturers are marketing an inbuilt fingerprint scanner. What I would like to know is if the laptops fingerprint reader is enabled and is stolen can anybody re-format the hard disk? Im keen to know. first off... not all finger print scanners are very good, the wipe over ones are much better then the older push down ones. (google for "gummy fingers") second the only thing that will stop the head drive being cloned or re-formated is whole drive encryption or IDE drive locking. most IDE drive support a cool IDE command of "lock this drive". this is done at a chip level and there is no unlock bypass unless you contact the drive maker. if your BIOS supports drive locking and finger print scanning then you could get the drive locked, the only unlock is the finger print. I dont know of any laptop that support both finger print scanning at BIOS level and drive locking...... |

Thanks |
