490942 2006-10-13 01:25:00 I'm sorry to say that Akai was a recognised and respected name in the 1970s- early 80s. Not sure what happened but it then went budget. Having said that, budget stereo gear today is high quality compared with years ago - just not as well put together and unfixable.Yeah, about the same period he had it (70s-80s). Perraux pre and power amp (they long gone too I think) etc etc Myth (110)
490943 2006-10-13 01:47:00 What about DSE brand? - they tend to appear reasonably often amongst the low priced more recent gear.

Or maybe one of the big chunky Pioneer, Sony or Yamaha models from the mid ot late '90's. There seem to be a few of those around also?

490944 2006-10-13 02:08:00 I picked up an old Plinius amp and preamp from a garage sale about 10 years ago for $100 it had a dodgy volume control which cost $50 to fix.
Best buy I ever made, as grunty as hell, I don't think the people realised what it was, but I did:cool:

490945 2006-10-13 08:51:00 Bought a massive Onkyo tuner-amp with all the fruit in immaculate as-new condition for $5 at a school garage sale. It is really something and now I have the best and loudest garage sound system in the neighbourhood. I think these retailed at around $2K+ when they were new and even now the performance is very good. The FM and AM tuners are quite remarkable for sensitivity and discrimination as well.

As for valve amps SJ, yes they are nice sounding, it is all the harmonic distortion and the effects of the output transformers that makes the difference. It is a nostalgia thing but if it pleases you ears that's perfect.

Cheers
