490405 2006-10-11 08:29:00 My friend isn't an MS fan. He recently wanted to try the FSX demo but had SP1 installed. (ON purpose)

He said:

"I wanted to try the FSX demo, and so had to install the dreaded SP2. It didn't like my ZoneAlarm (BSOD), so got the latest free ver 6.5.737.000, which uses heaps more resources than 4.0.123.012. SP2 also stuffed up my Softice (couldn't use it), and I think it also made other stuff a bit unstable - couple of BSODs - nasty!
Anyway, I stuffed around with FSX demo and just goes to show, don't believe everything you read on forums or the internet generally. I actually get pretty OK fps (set manually 26), although it does did a bit in places, it's smooth with everything graphics wise almost at max, and it's the beta demo, supposedly they fixed a few things and released another demo. It should be even better in the final product? You only get to fly around a few Islands in the Caribbean, but it looks pretty damn nice (pretty reflective water), with lots of hidden new features.

But I was determined to get it running on SP1. I needed to use the "Dependency Walker" util to find out what was missing in SP1 (took a while). The game calls two (mostly bogus) new Kernel exports (lame pointer encryption). I hacked 4 dlls and the FSX.exe (which did another check). I worked on it last night and this afternoon, and have now successfully got it working. Yay!!!!"

I'm more interested that he didn't have to install SP2. Cool!

490406 2006-10-11 09:38:00 I tried the demo, it ran ok on medium but didn't really do anything to excite me.

I am really happy with how FS9 looks on my modest system (AMD2600/1 gig ram /256 meg AGP) and with the add-ons available that I have got it wouldn't really make economic sense to upgrade the game, scenery (when available) and PC. It took a while to get it with solid fps (I lock at 24 and it's usually 23.8 ish), no stutters and generally giving me a visual pleasing product.

I fly mostly on Vatsim so don't use AI traffic.

Here are some of my shots of FS9, in a RealAir Spitty (carrying on Bruce's theme) ... using NZ 20m mesh, topo scenery, Real NZ WN, TG and AA, with Active Sky weather.

I would suggest that anyone with even a remote interest in fs read this.

That's the thing. Flight Sim is always a long-term investment. Each new version is never what you want right out of the box and usually gets just right -- with add-ons and new hardware -- just before the next version comes along. NZ in my FS9 install (which is sitting on my old PC and I haven't transferred over to my new box yet) looks way better than it does in FS X. But FS X is a really good foundation - better than FS9 was -- and I think we'll see Christain Stock, Robin Corn and others do some fantastic stuff for FS X in the next 12 months. And that's when you'll start wanting to switch over.

Those screenies look fantastic - might have to get myself this sim.
