714406 2008-10-24 07:21:00 Hi All,
At the last SeniorNet computer maintenance course, I suggested to the students that they instal FF3 as an alternative to IE7.

I received an email from one couple, who stated they could not install FF3.
The email is as follows:

We are currently using IE7 as browser and have been trying to download Firefox but without success. We have been getting an error message as follows.

Security alert, your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.

Even after temporarily turned off our antivirus software (Norton 360 V2) and trying to download an addon software from symantec we also get the same message. An online support person from symantec recommended trying a different browser, but unfortunately we get the same error message trying to download the Mozilla browser itself.

Any suggestions would be appreciated to enable me to help this couple out, and increase my limited knowledge.

714407 2008-10-24 07:24:00 Are they using a version of IE that supports protected mode??

If they are, disable it

714408 2008-10-24 07:30:00 You've lost me without any trouble, What is protected mode? escort1557 (13641)
714409 2008-10-24 07:36:00 Depending on what version of Windows is installed, some versions of IE 7 support protected mode, which is this (msdn.microsoft.com)

Even tho some of the MS site, say this only applies to Vista, it also works in XP if you have SP2 or later, And IE 7

And it could be why they're getting this message

Open IE go to tools / internet options / security tab. Is there an option for protected mode?? If there is untick it

Or check under tools / internet options / advanced. For Protected mode. 1/2 way down

714412 2008-10-24 18:34:00 Recommend they ditch Nortons too.
If they can't download it, they can get someone else to and copy it onto disk or flash drive and install it that way.
