491321 2006-10-17 22:25:00 there are many options that the computing world open up and as ststed in other postings here it all depends on what you are good at and where you really want to be doin.

there is always money to be made for the ones who are willing to wrok to get it. and that is the best advise i could give to anyone looking at getting into any working environment.

good luck with that

491322 2006-10-17 23:02:00 I am currently recruiting and many of the candidates, I have interviewed have started from a Technician background (including myself). The position I am offering is up on "seek", and the salary is over $60,000 for the right person. This is not bad for someone who has gone down the technical path, and then on to Servers. 491325 2006-10-18 21:06:00 Yeah... pretty sure those are the ones. Imo if you want to go hardware, do networking. Otherwise it's not worth it.

(but hey, my opinion comes from a very limited view, since I havn't been around much)

491326 2006-10-18 22:57:00 At the low end - become unemployed PC techs or low paid PC techs....

I trust you are not in anyway implying that is your situation. They have computers in Invercargill don't they... rich Southland farmers with busted PC's who you can charge mega bucks :D

My mother-in-law could do with some computer help with her Pentium 75 (yes!). Although I think she would prefer the company more.

Regardless of my situation - I meant it in general - being a shop tech is the lowest paid of all IT work. And they are a dime a dozen.

As for charging "rich farmers", what I charge is not based on their income. That would be unfair, and stupid anyway - they'd just go to the next tech for repairs.

I've had a couple of rich farmers, and a few poor ones too. They get charged the same, a fair price without being either too cheap or excessive.

I should charge Woosh - being their unofficial helpdesk.....
