493026 2006-10-20 21:23:00 Well . . . I finally took the challenge and after popping off the keys, I then put the keyboard into my kitchen dishwasher .

After placing it in the sun for about 4 hours and shaking it out again, I reinstalled the keys and it works!

I didn't run the high heat drier in the dishwasher though . . . I figgered that might be a little too much to wish for .

I am typing right now on the same keyboard . . . . and I think cleaning it makes the typos all go away too .

Next time: Do not eat fried chicken whilst entering text . :o

493027 2006-10-20 21:44:00 Hmm I never knew a keyboard was dishwahser safe

Anything electronic can get completely soaked and still work... as long as there is no power still in it or going into it and you let it dry for long enough... it should be fine.

493028 2006-10-20 22:02:00 Did you take any photos of the process?

No . . . not at all . . sorry!

I think it is pretty self-explanatory though . . . . but I'll print the instructions here:

Make sure computer is OFF!
Unplug connection from the keyboard into the computer .
Using a small flat blade . . . ie, a butter knife or thin flat screwdriver, gently pry one of the smaller keys off the keyboard . It will allow access to the other keys from a little lower position .
Place removed keys (the little letter thing-ys) in a small tub with your favorite cleaning agent like Windex or Basic-H or some other citrated bio-cleanser, letting them soak for a while .
Place keyboard, now devoid of key thing-ys into the bottom rack of your favorite dishwasher .
Use just the cool water setting if you have one, and make sure the heated drying cycle is turned off .
Run just one cycle (as tested and attested to, by me) and remove from dishwasher .
Shake vigorously to remove trapped water from interior of keyboard .
Place in sunlit and warm location for at least 4-6 hours, more if you really want to be sure of dryness; turning frequently to assist removing entrapped water .
Reverse all the above instructions to reinstall keyboard to computer .

Enjoy your (new) typo-free keyboard .

493032 2006-10-21 01:26:00 Well I tried it, but the dishwasher would not accept the keyboard and says she'll kill me if I try anything like that again R2x1 (4628)

493034 2006-10-24 07:09:00 One other thing - you need 2 keyboards, so you know the layout of the keys.

Or memorize them. :D

493035 2006-10-24 10:24:00 What I don't understand is why anybody would need to put their keyboard in the dishwasher at all. Maybe you might want/need to if you spilled coffee or beer in it, but anything else can simply be brushed or vacuumed out.

If keys are intermittent, you are better to dismantle the keyboard and remove the keys (much easier to do if you take it apart first) then use a spray type contact cleaner and lubricant to clean the contacts. That will spare the electronics from an unnecessary dousing in water, and if you can't get to them with a cleaning spray then a dishwasher isn't going to help either.

That's my perspective, your mileage may vary.

Cheers
