715090 2008-10-27 06:22:00 Are there any issues around having both IDE and SATA HDDs in the same system? Tony (4941)
715091 2008-10-27 06:26:00 Not really. As long as you remember whats on the drive, you can assign letter and name. Boot up might be a little slower due to drive checking.

Just remember to unplug the drive you want to keep when using Dariks Boot N Nuke :badpc:

715092 2008-10-27 06:31:00 Works fine - Just remember to go into the BIOS and tell it which drive is the boot / OS drive, other wise it may try to boot from the other one(s) and get a boot disk error. wainuitech (129)
715093 2008-10-27 11:19:00 There should be no problems whatsoever, provided you connect everything properly etc.. Agent_24 (57)
715094 2008-10-27 22:11:00 No issues whatso ever... running Window Server 2K3 Std Ed R2 with 2 x SATA and 8 IDE drives... 4 in a RAID0 config... no problems whatsoever...

cheers

There can be, depending on your motherboard. Some have RAID enabled by default and if you do not wish to use RAID and install a sATA hard drive without disabling RAID then you will have problems with the computer crashing/freezing, etc as I recently discovered.

How can I tell whether I have RAID enabled please ? - as I want to buy a second hard drive preferably today and thinking of getting SATA.

Our PC was bought in Feb 2005 but a new ASUS K8V-VM motherboard installed about twenty months ago.

Would something like Belarc Advisor or Everest indicate this perhaps ? I have looked at what pops up from Belarc and see nothing about RAID.

715098 2008-11-13 20:18:00 RAID will be enabled in the BIOS, and I think you need 2 hdd's the same brand / size. To use it

And if you've only got 1 hdd now and plan to get another, I would say you'll have to reformat, and start all over again

If RAID isnt enabled in the BIOS now, it needs to be enabled first

My original thinking (which I may still well go with) is that the second disc would be the one I would store data on . The old one would continue to host XP Home and programs on one partition and I would instal Vista (which I won in a competition) on the other partition .

Having the data only on the new drive would be safer (in general terms) to preserve against loss (though I would ensure good backup procedures) .

Wikipedia says

"RAID" is now used as an umbrella term for computer data storage schemes that can divide and replicate data among multiple hard disk drives . RAID's various designs all involve two key design goals: increased data reliability and increased input/output performance .

Now, whilst I can see speed as a definite plus, I dont think I need all that replication . Would feel more comfortable in having the stuff in clear places .
Also all of the hastles about reformatting . In my case it would be best to use the KISS principle . That make sense ? :D:

From what you say however I must ensure to check the BIOS and disable because I don't want it .

Any flaws in that thinking ? :illogical
