493179 2006-10-22 10:44:00 Hi

My parents can not get broadband because they live out in the country.
But they can get wired country through ICONZ (I think) but the cheapest
512/256 with 1GB limit is $60 a month. Why a high price ? and slow speed ?
You can get 3.5 but it's like $90 a month.
Why should they have to pay more ?

493180 2006-10-22 10:51:00 In the country the population density is low, so there's not many people per site, and it all has to get paid for by fewer users. If lots of people use it, other ISPs will leap in, and the price may drop. Catch 22, 'cause you won't get many users at those prices R2x1 (4628)

What about Woosh? They're not quite as expensive.

493183 2006-10-22 19:53:00 What about Woosh? They're not quite as expensive. If you're talking Woosh Wireless here, it will depend on whether they are in range. Woosh tend to concentrate on the heavily(-ish) populated areas (like most other ISPs)....

I can't even get a signal in a popular and populated place like Mt Maunganui when I visit the in-laws  with the family (looking for a distraction from the fact that I'm at the in-laws!) !! :)

493184 2006-10-26 03:13:00 They have to pay more because it costs more to provide it. Haven't you noticed? Everything costs more becausae we have been economically reformed. One of the prime movers of the reforms once said something like(and I think he was serious): "Things cost more because of the increased efficiency of the reformed system". Graham L (2)

But they can get wired country through ICONZ (I think) but the cheapestYou mean they can't get ADSL. ;) Broadband just means a high speed connection, typically faster than 256k, thus wireless - whether it be Woosh/satellite/WiMax/HSDPA etc - is counted as broadband.

Why should they have to pay more ?Economies of scale.
