Looks really horrifying.

494569 2006-10-27 15:50:00 This morning as I awake . . . still alive, mind you . . . . the fire's moved pretty much to the West and South . . . . nearer to us, but actually going all around our Northern flank . Our valley is still completely full of white smoke . . . the color of the smoke was black for a while yesterday until the fire generated it's own weather patters and took the black smoke to higher altitudes .

Still 0-5% containment, as it was last night about 9PM our time (-7GMT) .

One badly burned firefighter still clinging to life . . . his lungs are failing and he is 90-95% burned over his body . He probably will not survive .

The civilian count is all over the board as to deaths . Some count to 20+, others are much more conservative . . . all the way down to no civilian casualties at all . Time will tell .

I can hear the helicopters rallying now on my radio scanner . . . they are going to work the new front lines in the Gilman Springs and Soboba Hot Springs area, on the Indian reservation . . . YES . . we have Indians in our areas!

I have to get to Loma Linda this AM somehow . . . almost all roads in that direction are closed so I will have to drive a very long way around to get there .

We have fire crews from San Francisco and San Marino . . . way up inNorthern Califonia . There are over 3000 firefighters here now, and they are being encamped in our fields and hotels/motels .

Winds are still up to 60MPH and humidity is very low at 2-8% now .

The meteriological strangeness of these Santa Ana winds is that as they drop in altitude, they compress and accelerate, dropping moisture lower and the velocities sometimes to 75MPH . The winds start as a hig pressure area, usually around the four-corners area of the US Southwest . . . Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado where there is very dry air in the first place . They spin in a clockwise motion and as they travel West to East, the winds will shift from an absolute Eastern direction that really heats up and drys the air .

The winds on the other side of our local mountains cause a deep temperature drop and there's been strong freeze warnings to those outlying areas . Many food crops get frozen that way while we normally cook in our own juices . The one nice thing os the winds is that they really clean out the air, smog-wise .

New areas that are burned over:

Sunshine Peak, Black Mountain, Soboba Hot Springs, several unincorporated villages and residences .

I just lost the rest of this post as the connection timed out when I tried to preview it . . I will post it all again when I get back from my lab tests for my next surgery . . . on the 32st .

Sorry . . . . .

494570 2006-10-27 15:51:00 SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE . . IT WAN'T MY FAULT!

I made a mistake on the date at the end of this . . . there is NO 32st of October . . . I meant the 31st!

494571 2006-10-27 20:13:00 Had seen this thread but had not read any of it until now. Scary stuff ! As I read it we will not get an update from SurferJoe until Tuesday as he will by now have gone on his journey to Loma Linda. :( Am sure thoughts of a lot of us from PressF1 will be with him. He is a unique contributor.

494572 2006-10-30 14:43:00 BULLETIN!

The fire's about 80% contained, and the true results of it's damage will be broadcast today by about noon our time (-7 GMT).

The surviving firefighter has burns over 90% of his body, and although still alive, is not expected to make it.

The blanketing smoke has abated and we can breathe again....but we still see a plume of smoke rising from areas, mostly to the South of the original fire areas.
