We are looking at buying a notebook .... the 95million $ question which one. We will be wanting to use it overseas.. to access the internet for emails bank info etc. It will probably be needed to have MSoffice on it. What sort of software should come with it. Do we have to buy extra software ( eg we have the windows xp on the desktop model and msoffice xp also ) Both these have only been used once. How does new windows Vista affect all of this. ( please don't get to technical)Is any one supplier better than the next? and anything else you may think of ... Thanks in advance

494051 2006-10-25 22:27:00 Well, for overseas travel, world wide warranty support would be essential on any new item carried, Vista may be prettier, but it consider the merits of sticking with the familiar systems since hotel room internet access tends to be $$$$$$$$$$ intensive. Also, there may be quite a settling down period with any new OS. A multi-voltage power adaptor/charger would be rather handy. Have a nice trip. :-) R2x1 (4628)
494052 2006-10-25 22:39:00 My understanding is that you can use wireless hotspots to link into your own ISP and this will be at the same cost as using you computer from home/work. my understanding this works both for broadband and dialup? fluffydog (11346)

My bank's understanding is that overseas roaming access rates cause withdrawal symptoms. Quicker is $$ better.:2cents:

494054 2006-10-26 05:05:00 Windows comes with most most laptops. There are a few w/o but that is few. Basically add your own MS Office and any other software ya like. Security software can be downloaded and are v good.

For the adaptor, get a traveller adaptor. No need for a voltage type, as laptops are auto switching worldwide. Some may argue, but I don't bother with surge protector of any sort.

For net access, basically use the internet cafes and ask if ya can wire ya laptop to it. There are free wifi in many larger cities. Hotel internet is gonna be expensive, likewise if ya use cellular internet or satellite phone internet, not sure if wifi roaming, but I guess you can do it when pple can do normal internet roaming. If I am not mistaken on dialup with some companies in NZ when you hit abroad you can roam for 33k or 56k connection and per hour it cost $10.
