Now... look at the following quote
His latest feat could help companies such as Microsoft Corp., Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which have all announced plans over the past few months for music download services combined with new devices to challenge Apple.Isn't what 'DVD Jon' has done... illegal? If so, how does it help these other companies? Wouldn't they get completely sued for using this crack or whatever

494057 2006-10-25 22:05:00 "Legal" or "Illegal" in commerce these days appears to be determined by the price of your lawyers; so them with the deepest pockets win. (Naturally, all parties' lawyers win big time) R2x1 (4628)
494058 2006-10-25 22:08:00 Ahh, right. But just to sort this out... it IS illegal? So a number of lawyers are going to be cackling with glee over all this?

Quite sneaky those lawyers are. They probably payed 'DVD Jon' to do it in the first place, heh.

Its illegal as far as Apple is concerned. MS, Sony etc couldn't care less unless he then cracks their own DRM.
MS is bigger than Apple anyway which is why they won the last court battle with Apple even though Apple was in the right.

It doesn't mean they'll use his crack. It means his crack lessens the commercial appeal of fairplay and thus opens up competition for others.

So, it's the Wild West all over again......

Justice out of the barrel of a wallet.

How apt.

Apple's DRM system, Fairplay, is used with iPods and music downloaded from its iTune store (which we poor yokels in NZ don't have) -- and other vendors don't have access to it. Nor do iPods support the non-Fairplay DRM schemes put out by other vendors.

So if you want to use iTunes (whic alrage part of the world that ins't US does), then you need an iPod. The security of Fairplay, is I assume (and I mean assume, I have no inside knowledge on this) a significant factor in Apple having the relationships it does with the Music vendors and has helped it make iTune ssuch a success.

Now, if doubts are cast baout how secure Fairplay is as a DRM system then Apple's music partners get nervous and are more likely to look at other alternatives from other companies (MS etc).

And since Apple owns such a large chunk of the portable music market, due to its itunes+ipod combo, any dent its competitots can put in its armour will be welcomed by them, as they all want a bigger piece of the action.

That's one thing. And of course, if Fairply is so cracked that suddenly you don't NEED and iPod to use Fairplay protected music, then even though it isn't legal, I'm sure plenty of MP3 hardware vendors will be rubbing their hands in glee ...

Nah, it's just one of the funnier typos I've seen in a while :p

494065 2006-10-26 02:51:00 Supposedly the "crack" is being licensed to Businesses distributing content. So long as the copyright holder is part of this and getting royalties where is the illegallity? PaulD (232)
