1430844 2017-01-20 18:29:00 On this past Tuesday - January 17th, I was to get a total knee replacement (right knee) .

I had showered with the special soap for the past three days - shaved my kneecap (don't ask) and had my ditty bag packed and new jammies and slippers, tablet, charger, toiletries, etc . , in hand when the doctor called me into a small office (his?) and said that there were broken water pipes in surgery and he's cancelling the operation for a few (five!) weeks until all the dust settles down .

I appreciate his honesty and not wanting to give me an infected knee replacement - but dang it!

I was ready .
I was wanting it done!
I was happy and looking forward to the pain of recovery and then I was waiting to get the other knee replaced in 5 or 6 weeks after the first!

I WANT to walk over the mountains to my west and my east .
I want to walk/hike to hidden lakes for trout!
I want to launch my canoe and explore new secret fishing areas!

The frozen water pipes over the three day holiday and that the engineering department was told to shut off the heat in the surgery suites - that, and the below zero degrees temps over that three day weekend - have caused me a lot of ------ grief .

Gack!

1430845 2017-01-20 23:15:00 Had my knee done a year ago, really, no pain! You do have to work on physio to get you knee, muscles and tendons back to normal. I did have a real problem in that I had a blood clot, ended up in the lung and the knee was bound up for 14 days so I couldn't exercise it and that caused problems for me. You might like to ask your surgeon about blood thinning in plenty of time before your op. Also, and I don't need to tell you, a spinal block far out-weighs a general aesthetic. Good luck Joe. 1430846 2017-01-20 23:19:00 There is no blood thinning. What it does is decrease the clotting factor. Don't take it unless you need to. A lack of clotting can cause other issues. pctek (84)
1430847 2017-01-21 02:44:00 I'm on Coumadin anyway - and I will likely need to 'bridge' for four days postop . I have been given four doses of Heparin belly shots for that time .

My INR has been 2 . 5 for a year now - and I don't want to mess it up . Having had a TIA a few years ago (my atrial-fib caused that) and then being put on Coumadin, has not caused me any trouble . I've never had oddball bleeding or hemorrhages, etc . ,

I have no problem with Coumadin and I'm not going to the new miracle versions for which there are no field tests and they haven't had enough time with them to know if there are or aren't dangerous side effects of lasting damage from them .

"Warfarin, sold under the brand name Coumadin among others, is a medication that is used as a blood thinner."

1430849 2017-01-22 04:31:00 Had both knees done, two years apart. First one, general anasthetic. Bad bruising set back the recovery, 3 days before I got home. Number two, under a spinal block. I was able to watch. Quite bizzare really, Recovery was 100% better, and home much sooner. Out of bed the same day. Full recovery and use of, takes some time, you will need to follow the advice of your physio religiously. I have heard of patients getting both done at the same time. I have heard they can do them laproscopicly now rather than opening up the knee. Good luck S J, let us know how it goes.
