I tried to run the repair tool mentioned in the previous message from Lawrence.... I just got the error that the repair tool had stopped working.... and I tried to uninstall Thunderbird - from Control Panel uninstall - wouldn't shift... sigh...

Suggest you edit your post and remove teh email address other wise spammers my hit ya. Have go it now so I'll send you a mail shortly.
