Re: ACER Aspire 3002WLMI S/N: LXA550511752901846EM00
I am trying to install AVG anti-virus software, but as I try to do it I am getting an "Attention" message saying that "another anti-virus/security product is installed on this computer". I did have a trial version of ESET Smart Security installed having been recommended to it. And before installing it, I removed the previous installation of AVG. However, I have found that the new Smart Security software didn't do all that was claimed so I decided not to continue with it. I tried to remove the program using "Add and Remove programs" but there was a hitch in the removal which froze up the computer and I had to turn off the power. When I restarted the computer, the ESET Smart Security no longer appeared on the list of programs, so I searched for all files with "eset" in and removed those relating to the anti-virus software.

I have also found a few "Symantec"files left over from when I had Norton anti-virus software installed prior to getting AVG about a year ago and have deleted them but they obviously didn't cause a problem originally because I was able to install AVG at the time.

Please can you help me to find the supposed anti-virus software on my computer, or tell me that it doesn't matter and that I can go ahead and install the AVG software.

Thanking you in anticipation.

715602 2008-10-28 23:11:00 Norton AV programs are really tricky to remove manually. Do a google search for Norton removal tool and download the one that matches the program you originally had.

Let us know how you get on!!

715603 2008-10-28 23:55:00 What were you not happy about with Nod32 / Smart Security ? if its set up correctly it works a LOT better than AVG which misses so much its not funny.

If you had symantec rubbish installed still that could be half of your problem.

What you can try is reinstalling Esets Smart Security, it should overwrite any files left behind, then if you want try removing it again - BUT sometimes it does appear to be "hanging/Freezing" when uninstalling - but its not, this may have been your problem.

There is a official removal tool,( I'm a Nod32 Reseller) click on This Link here (www.nod32.co.nz) and the removal tool will download

715604 2008-10-29 00:30:00 Thank you very much Nofam and Wainuitech. I had decided to delete the Nod32 stuff because I had been advised by a friend of mine with IT experience that that software would prevent much of the spam which was getting through when I was using AVG. But I was disappointed that it didn't appear to do so. However, I am going to take Wainuitech's advice and reinstall ESET Smart Security - I still have the installation program on my computer - and pay for the full version. (I was running the trial version before.)

OK; I've just done that - I'm writing this on my wife's computer . . thank goodness we've got two in the house! - and everything appears to be fine.

What an asset this PressF1 Forum is! I'm so grateful to you both for your prompt responses.

715605 2008-10-29 00:36:00 the eset AV is very good, especially the full version which i have had no problems with GameJunkie (72)

NOD is an antivirus . Or AV + Firewall .
Why would you expect it to be a SPAM filter? Use Thunderbird, enable the Junk control feature . That will clear the SPAM .

715607 2008-10-29 00:45:00 Have you ever tried Quickheal? Its very good, not performance hungry and deletes viruses on the fly.

715608 2008-10-29 01:05:00 The spam filter I use is Mailwasher (http://www.mailwasher.net/) It's a manual process but works well - how it works is it reads your mail from your ISP's server before it comes through, you tick the ones you dont want, you can add in friends or blacklist then when you click Process mail it dumps the ones you ticked and only allows the one through to your PC that you want.

The paid version allows more than 1 account , the Free version only allows 1 account, features of both about half way down that linked page.

715609 2008-10-29 04:57:00 Thanks everybody; I'll consider each of the suggestions above especially those about spam filters. It hadn't occurred to me that an anti-virus wouldn't also be a spam filter, but now that you have pointed it out, it's obvious!! Ah well, at least I know that now I've reinstalled the eset AV I'm protected from the bad nasties. jno (12040)
715610 2008-10-29 06:57:00 My full eset allows me to send stuff to spam and it remembers the stuff I flagged, but the best yet is my gmail so far nothing has got through gary67 (56)
