495104 2006-10-30 03:40:00 Hi, being a dialup user the transfer rate for downloads is generally 4-5k/sec. How do I calculate this speed for broadband? What is the range that I can expect. What about upload?

I have been looking at the BB options, it appears the $50 plan is no longer available with 10GB of Max/512k option. Its now been offered at 2GB for the same $50. Other than a $80 plan that offers 15GB.

Thanks.

495105 2006-10-30 04:25:00 In theory:

Your line speed is approximately 1357.8 Kbps or 166.4 K bytes/sec

My best......
Should get 200 really.

Or on a full speed plan up to 800.

But it won't necessarily work like that, heaps of people are complaining about slow speeds now.

495106 2006-10-30 07:22:00 I am going via the plans. Well the $30 plan no way. The $40 one allows 1GB so that's a gonna too. The $50 plan well ok. Maybe faster upstream that puts me to $80, haha. Looks like its gonna be $50+ with possible sources of other ISPs.

For max down/up it seems like Clear PDQ at $55 for 10GB.

495107 2006-10-30 07:35:00 What about ihugs phone and broadband with 10 gb for $50 thats not too bad if thats the amount of data you want. Hitech (9024)
495108 2006-10-30 07:43:00 Speaking of broadband speed,
I switched to xtras go large plan and my speed increased from 3.1mbps to a whopping 3.7mbps max what a pile of crap xtras speeds are,In todays modern society of modern technology you would think telecom would invest and certainly can afford to rip out the copper wire to the house and replace it with fibre optic wire. But no they are nothing but a pack of money laundering cheapskates.

495109 2006-10-30 10:30:00 I had a look of ihug earlier, didn't appeal. Had another look. Not really worth it unless I am missing something. $50 for 7.6/128k 10GB. Telecom provides the $50 Go Large Plan and its unlimited (with clause). What I may look into is max up/downstream or that the upstream needs to be 512k. Nomad (952)

sounds good, what exactly do you intend to use the interweb for? all that bandwidth for surfing or running a dc++ hub? point being why pay extra for a service that you cannot fully utilise... no pun intended

and remember, just cause they say 7.6Mbit doesnt mean you'll get it. I'm on a 2Mbit plan and only get between 1 to 1.5Mbit speed... then again i'm 6.5km from my already overloaded exchange.... the router rekons it could accept up to 1664Kbit with my current wiring.
point being, where abouts are you and what max speed do your neighbours get? you should expect to get around the same - again why pay extra for a service which cannot be provided (i opted out of the 3.5Mbit "upgrade" as ihug was cutting data caps in half at the same time, but i can't even get the 2Mbit i'm paying for lol)

495111 2006-10-30 21:45:00 I don't have access to the older plans given I am not a BB customer as of yet. All plans suitable are $50+, anything less are 200MB or 1GB or by 3rd parties.

I use the net for general stuff, in addition, big downloads such as programs and games, uploading enlargement photo's to labs, video streaming, perhaps may look into skype as well.

I'm in Welly, Churton Park area, anyone there? I have no idea what my neighbours are getting.

495112 2006-10-31 03:40:00 It might pay to wait until Xnet release their new plans next Monday. IMO, they have the best deals in terms of price/performance (i.e. speed/data cap), esp. now Ihug has changed it's plans. For example:

Ihug: $60 - Max/128 10GB ($50 if you use Ihug for your landline and tolls)
Xnet: $42.95 - 2Mb/128 10GB (no extra charges to keep your existing tolls)

Although Ihug are offering max download, experience has shown that this is a very minor benefit, if you ever actually reach those speeds. And as I said, next Monday the new Xnet plans are coming out - if their past offerings are anything to go by, expect something pretty good.

To top it off, Ihug throttle you back to dial-up speed when you go over 10GB. Xnet have overages, meaning you can keep on enjoying those blistering () speeds.

It's a pretty clear choice, IMO. I'm surprised that anyone bothers with Ihug/Xtra these days...
