495835 2006-11-03 04:33:00 A side by side comparison between Vista and Ubuntu as an example in a later edition. You need to compare a XGL capable distro such as SuSE/Novell for the 3D graphical desktop against the similar offerings Vista is reported to have. Jen (38)
495836 2006-11-03 05:58:00 So are you saying that if you want or intend to have Vista, youd be better to build / buy new comp specifically suited to that?

and not try to upgrade what you currently have? or is that really only if you are a gamer?
Not that i worried about Vista, as i have XP. and dont game, so dont have the need or want to upgrade, but just interested.

495838 2006-11-03 11:26:00 Does this Direct x 10 mean having to buy a new video card? In another forum people are talking about dir x 10 video cards.
I am thinking of buying another 7900GT card now for a SLI arrangement. If I have to change them again in a couple of months, I won't bother.

OK Bruce, chasing that thread back and forth a few dozen posts severely tested my short attention span. You owe me a half hour of my life. Good value though. :waughh:

495841 2006-11-04 01:24:00 And is DX 10 going to be backwardly compatable with DX 9 software?

And dual core cpu's . I can only speak from my own experience . I had an AMD 4400+ x 2 cpu that would not run a fully loaded fs9 . When the going got to much for it it just shut the program down . Several experts spent a lot of time trying to help me,all without success .
In the end I bought a 4000+ single core cpu and all my troubles vanished .

As a point of interest my dual core recorded a score of 2900+ on the PCPitstop test . The single core records about 2400 .
This simply means that fs9 does not recognise half of the dual core cpu .

In practice the program runs much faster and smoother with the single core .

Again from my own experience . FS X runs no better on Vista than it does on XP . If you set your settings too ambitiously the program justs cuts them back to the level it can handle .

At present I have both fs9 and fs x on my computer . FSX has NZ 20M mesh and a couple of Real NZ cities installed . All the settings are at low . The results are rather disappointing . For example the "Cake Tin" in Wgton is shown as an open park . No grandstands . Road traffic is about two cars a minute in peak hours .
Yet in fs9 everything is as it should be .

I think to see the best of fsx it will be necessary for someone to produce bigger cpu's and vid cards
