495428 2006-11-01 00:34:00 Two groups of littlies were the only trick 'n treaters that visited last night so I got to polish off the majority of my treats myself.

In previous years we have had a couple of dozen groups visit so it seems like either the novelty of halloween has worn off or the majority of parents are refusing to let their children participate these days, despite the Big Red Shed's best efforts. Can't really say that I am sorry as I don't believe in it either, but it's a lot of fun for the kids.

495429 2006-11-01 01:29:00 No, I didn't look . . . I remembered .

And it's not a totally pagan ritual . It's partly descended from the Christian calendar .
The night before All Souls Day is Halloween = "hallowed evening . "
But the idea that the dead walk then - and the witches come out - has been added by "others . "

So how did I do?

(Some of that stuff I learned in Sunday School comes in handy for the strangest reasons . . . )

I well have to look up google .

Trevor :)

495431 2006-11-01 02:53:00 I don't really care if it's roots come from Christian or other sources. Fact of the matter is that what it is NOW is nothing less than yet another compulsory giving day, like that Christmas farce, Mothers day, Fathers day, Valentines day, and all the other days that exists to trick otherwise sensible people into giving "gifts" based on nothing but observation of tradition rather than giving because it would actually bring something positive to a friends lives, or in someway help the common good.

Humbug!!!

495432 2006-11-01 03:23:00 I refuse to practice pagan demon worship.

But if you don't practice, you'll never get better at it! ;)

I wanted to tell people this, demonstrating my "knowledge", but I couldn't quite work it out. Today (Nov 1) is All Saint's Day, and tomorrow (Nov 2) is All Soul's Day - so Halloween would be All Soul's Eve' Eve... :illogical

Maybe my two attack cats worked. Who knows?

Hmmmmm

Looks as though my Souls should be changed to Saints .

Now there's an upgrade for you . . .

495436 2006-11-01 05:18:00 If it didn't have its roots in paganism I'd support it wholeheartedly. We have some absolutely delightful kiddies in our neighbourhood. But as it is, we just ignore the doorbell.

A lot of traditions are derived from pagan versions. They aren't all bad.

I assume Greg turns down Easter eggs too, cause they've got diddly to do with the Christian side of Easter....

... but then it's hardly a conincidence that "easter" occurs at "easter". The Christian Church was very clever at spreading itself by co-opting existing pagan festival times into its own calandar. They knew a thing or two about how to market a new product .....
