495825 2006-11-02 23:20:00 It won't be until a Direct X 10 update for it - which MS has promised - is released in the new year after Vista goes retail. Various FSX team members are on record as stating you get a 5% performance hit currently under Vista.
Does that hit do any damage, or is it just a glancing blow?
And another, bigger hit to the wallet.

Does this Direct x 10 mean having to buy a new video card? In another forum people are talking about dir x 10 video cards.
I am thinking of buying another 7900GT card now for a SLI arrangement. If I have to change them again in a couple of months, I won't bother.

Yes.
And other things like masses of RAM and dual core CPUs.....

All that so you can have Billy in charge of your PC instead of yourself(DRM).

To make use of new hardware features in DirectX 10, you will need a new DirectX 10-specific GPU, just as to use new features in DirectX9 we needed DirectX9 cards (remember before Half life 2 came out and Valve was showing off DirectX9 features in the game . . ) .

Now that isn't to say that once the Vista/DirectX 10 combo is running with games that have been updated for DirectX 10, that your existing hardware might not show some improvement . But the wizz bang stuff will be specific to DirectX 10 hadrware .

Personally, I don't think running out and buying into the first generation of DirectX 10 cards is a good idea, and you won't need to for some time, since game developers will continue to produce games that support DirectX9 for some time .

I read a post somewhere (can't remember where sorry) from a FS X developer talking about the DX10 update to FS X where he was basically stating that until they get hold of enough DX10 cards to test with, they don't really know what advantages they will be eaking out of the new DirectX 10 APIs with an FSX update .

So really, I don't think you're going to want to ditch your existing cards within at least 6 months, probaly longer, unless you really like spending up large on 1st-generation technology .

I think an update to FS X that utilises the power of Dual Core CPUs more effectively might offer a better performance boost for more people in the short term .

495829 2006-11-03 01:43:00 DX9 cards such as your 7900GT will be capable of playing DX10 games, but you wont be able to use all the eye candy. Due to a significant change in upcoming GPU architecture nobody is particularly sure how DX9 hardware will handle DX10 games (its all to do with vertex and pixal shaders etc). Chances are that game developers will code in some form a DX9 backward compatiablity, just dont expect stellar performance in DX10 games with DX9 hardware.

nVidia is set to release the 8800GTS and 8800GTX on the 8th of November, these cards will be the first generation of DX10 card to reach consumers. They wont be cheap at around $800 US they'll only be an option for the rich and the insane. Dont expect to see mid and low range DX10 cards till atleast Feburary next year, and realistically not till atleast the end of March possibly even later.

Jack assuming the only game you play is Flight Sim, and assuming Flight Sim is only DX9 then another 7900GT will probably be sufficent for your needs. If Microsoft is planning to release a new version of FS or a patch to add DX10 support then a DX10 card may warrent consideration.

Its been reported on the internet that the 8800GTX gets about 11000 3DMarks on an overclocked Core 2 Duo . Initial infomation tends to suggest that scores are highly effected by CPU clock speed .
